Polhaun Holiday Apartments - Berlewen

Photo: Adrian Gray

Polhaun Holiday Apartments - Berlewen is a ground-floor apartment built to take advantage of its hilltop location. The living space opens onto a patio with garden furniture; from here and the bedroom you look out across Mevagissey Harbour and the bay beyond. An open-plan living and dining area contains a 32" TV and electric fire. The kitchen has an electric oven, hob and microwave for self-catering. One bedroom with a kingsize bed and French doors to the patio, plus a shower room and separate toilet complete the layout. All on one level, though there are three steps at the entrance.

The apartment is your own self-contained space on shared landscaped grounds with a private parking space. Electricity, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi are included. This is a no-smoking property. Mevagissey itself is a working fishing harbour with restaurants, shops, pubs and art galleries within a mile; the beach is two miles away. The Lost Gardens of Heligan and Eden Project are straightforward drives, as is Charlestown with its maritime museum and tall ships. The South West Coast Path runs through the area for coastal walking towards Pentewan and Portmellon.

Tom, the host, is an absolute delight, friendly and welcoming, always ready to chat. When you stay here, take the time to talk to him. His knowledge of the area and his experiences make him an indispensable guide and storyteller. The apartments are comfortable and clean, perfect for relaxing in or as a base for wider exploration. The view is stunning and quiet. We left the TV off all week, eating our meals on the terrace, watching the boats in the harbour instead. Mevagissey is a wonderful little village, eateries, bakery's and ice cream parlours galore. The Fountain Pub is worth a visit. The lost gardens of Heligan as well. The Eden Project is 25 minutes drive away. Further out, Falmouth, The Minack Theatre and Lands End are all within driving distance.

Perched on the hillside and only 5 mins walk into Mevagissey with parking! Brilliant spot! Lots of walks from the apartment along the coast. Extremely comfy bed ...very clean and tidy. Owner an absolute legend...

We wanted somewhere with a view and being sat on the terrace of this apartment looking over Mevagissey was perfect. The only downside with a view like this is the climb up and down to the village centre, it helps to work off the evening meal. We had apartment number 3 of 4, 2-4 looked to be of the same layout but number 4 didn't have as much sun in the afternoon but it is easy to move into the garden. Apartment 1 had the best position, sun morning and later in the afternoon and is larger. The interior of the apartment was very clean but quite old, some comments in the guest book complained about the mismatched kitchen equipment, cups etc but we thought that added to the charm. The bathroom looked like it had been refitted not that long ago. Tom the owner who lives on site is a wonderful character, very sprightly at 81, full of the history of the village having lived there all his life and lots of wonderful stories. Just ask him about boat building!! Lots to do in the village and local area, we were there for a week and didn't go further than 15 miles.
