Polhaun Holiday Apartments - Sowenna

Photo: Adrian Gray

Mevagissey's working harbour, rebuilt in the 1770s, still bustles with fishing boats and water sports. From the patio of Sowenna, one of four apartments at Polhaun, you can watch activity on the water while sitting among landscaped grounds. The village itself—colourful cottages climbing the hillside, independent shops, galleries and pubs within a mile—connects to coastal footpaths heading towards Pentewan and Portmellon. The beach is two miles away. For broader exploration, the Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan are easily reached by car, as is Charlestown with its tall ships and maritime museum.

The apartment itself is compact and on one level. You have a combined living and dining space with a 32-inch TV and DVD player, opening onto the patio. The kitchen is equipped for self-catering with an electric oven and hob, microwave and fridge. The bedroom contains two single beds; the ensuite has a shower and heated towel rail. Electricity, bed linen, towels and wifi are included. One parking space comes with the property, which matters in a busy harbour village. The grounds are shared with other apartments on site but landscaped with flower beds and pathways.

The apartment does not allow smoking. Children are not accepted. There are two steps at the entrance and a pond in the grounds.

Tom, the host, is an absolute delight, friendly and welcoming, always ready to chat. When you stay here, take the time to talk to him. His knowledge of the area and his experiences make him an indispensable guide and storyteller. The apartments are comfortable and clean, perfect for relaxing in or as a base for wider exploration. The view is stunning and quiet. We left the TV off all week, eating our meals on the terrace, watching the boats in the harbour instead. Mevagissey is a wonderful little village, eateries, bakery's and ice cream parlours galore. The Fountain Pub is worth a visit. The lost gardens of Heligan as well. The Eden Project is 25 minutes drive away. Further out, Falmouth, The Minack Theatre and Lands End are all within driving distance.

Perched on the hillside and only 5 mins walk into Mevagissey with parking! Brilliant spot! Lots of walks from the apartment along the coast. Extremely comfy bed ...very clean and tidy. Owner an absolute legend...

Really nice little apartment which wasn't expensive in school holidays. Well equipped and the view is fab. TD the owner is a really nice chap to boot. Would happily return.

We wanted somewhere with a view and being sat on the terrace of this apartment looking over Mevagissey was perfect. The only downside with a view like this is the climb up and down to the village centre, it helps to work off the evening meal. We had apartment number 3 of 4, 2-4 looked to be of the same layout but number 4 didn't have as much sun in the afternoon but it is easy to move into the garden. Apartment 1 had the best position, sun morning and later in the afternoon and is larger. The interior of the apartment was very clean but quite old, some comments in the guest book complained about the mismatched kitchen equipment, cups etc but we thought that added to the charm. The bathroom looked like it had been refitted not that long ago. Tom the owner who lives on site is a wonderful character, very sprightly at 81, full of the history of the village having lived there all his life and lots of wonderful stories. Just ask him about boat building!! Lots to do in the village and local area, we were there for a week and didn't go further than 15 miles.
