About Okehampton Youth Hostel
Tucked into the grounds of YHA Okehampton, this family-friendly camping field puts you right on the doorstep of Dartmoor, with direct access to the moors and the Granite Way cycle path. Pitches sit on a flat, enclosed grassy area, and campers enjoy full use of the hostel's facilities – bathrooms, self-catering kitchen, TV and games rooms, plus a café, shop and wifi.
The real draw is the on-site adventure centre, offering daily outdoor sessions from archery and high ropes to gorge scrambling, kayaking and abseiling. During school holidays, individuals and small groups can join in; otherwise, you'll need six or more to book activities – handy for hen and stag weekends or group challenges. Bike hire covers adults, kids and tag-alongs.
Some visitors note the facilities can feel a touch tired in places, but the location and activity options more than compensate. It's a practical, adventurous base for exploring one of England's wildest landscapes.

What visitors say
Usually I highly rate the YHAs as an affordable family stay but this one is the exception. I thought it was extremely poor 1. You have to make your own bed on arrival. I have 4 kids so that was a lot of beds to make when we arrived late at night. 2. There is no breakfast or dinner options, you have to go out. 3. The rooms are tiny, you can’t sit up in the top bunks and for 6 people they provide a few hooks. No cupboard and only two plug sockets. 4. Not a single shelf in the room. Nowhere to even put a toothbrush, everything has to remain in your bag on the floor.

A large number of a 20 strong motorbike group stayed here overnight. The receptionist was top-notch and booked us in methodically without a fuss. The whole place is clean, modern and well decorated. A lovely conversion of an old train station annexe building. The room was a decent size with two pairs of bunks, a private bathroom including shower with plenty of hot water and pressure, just what you need after a sweaty day in the saddle. The onsite cafe did lovely coffees because the reception machine needed to be cleaned and serviced. They were trying out the idea of cooking pizzas in the evening The lady in the cafe kindly made me and my friends coffees in the morning despite not actually being open. Apparently, the pizza idea wasn't a great success. Maybe some promotion might help? There is a large car park which, although not secure, is far enough from prying eyes, due to the hostels location, that we didn't have any concerns re the security of our motorbikes. It's quiet at night and the trains don't run too late. The whole place makes you feel you're in the countryside which is nice. Downsides Non operational coffee machine in reception when I was gagging for a coffee, but the gent in the cafe saved the day. The laminate floor in our bedroom ( last on the right before the lounge upstairs) had gaps between the planks and the edges were starting to fur, not ideal when bare footed. The bathroom extractor fan ran for a long time after turning off the bathroom light. Noticeable in such a quiet location £79 for the room is still the best part of £20 per person if fully occupied. It gets expensive as room only when below capacity. That said we had the trifecta of being there on the Saturday night of a bank holiday weekend at the start of half term, so no doubt the price reflects that

Wow what a lovely little railway station ! We stopped off on our journey home from few days in Cornwall and found an very clean place to enjoy a hot chocolate and cake ! The little cafe was busy but service was good and quick. Nice choice of snacks and drinks. The little original "waiting room" was beautifully restored and very well kept. Trains seemed to be arriving on time and was a nice experience all round. Good parking just outside main platform

For what it is as a youth hostel i’m sure it’s great, but a “3 star hotel” is not the case. If you are thinking over staying here and not a young adult, the mattress (if you can call them that) don’t support you, you might as well just sleep on the metal framework… towels are £2 for hire and might as well be a bath matt. The room was so cold when we 1st got in, and the radiator is clearly just there for decoration. If you advertise as a hotel and have bunk beds as your beds, then maybe don’t advertise as a “hotel”. The room its self was very untidy with dust and bits of dirt under the beds still, with mould in the bathroom. Being woken up at 5:00 in the morning by people running up and down the corridor and shouting just to add to this places charm. I’m sure it’s a great youth hostel for young adults, but really should not be advised as a hotel. Please make this more clear. Upon arrival we were told by email we could check in by 23:00, as we were travelling late from a work shift. But got told off for checking in late. And was told ‘for future reference, you must check in by 22:00.’ Even though we had confirmation we could check in later, but was still made to feel as though it was our fault. And spoken to in a very patronising way. For what it is, as I’ve said for activity’s, and hiking it’s okay. But this is not a hotel. And bring some kind of extra mattress’s topper. If you want a decent bed.
