About The Oval
For travellers wanting a quiet base for walking, riding or bringing the dog along, The Oval offers a straightforward cottage stay on West Street in Dunster, just a short stroll from Dunster Castle and the Yarn Market. With only three rooms, it suits couples or small groups looking for somewhere low-key rather than a large hotel setup.
Guests have use of a kitchen and outdoor seating area, with drinks available in the room and reception staffed around the clock. Free parking is available nearby, a short walk from the property, which is worth knowing if you're arriving by car. Pets are welcome, making it a practical choice for those travelling with animals.
Dunster itself gives easy access to Exmoor's walking and cycling routes, horse riding, fishing and watersports, along with pubs, restaurants and other eateries close at hand. Minehead beach is also within reach for a day out. It's a well-placed spot for exploring this part of Somerset at an easy pace.

I decided to write a review this time, having stayed at the Oval every year for the past 4 years. What a find! We love it there. It has so much character, warmth and right in the middle of Dunster Village. As far as holiday stays go it doesnt get much better. Lucy and her team made us so welcome, house was immaculate and will be booking again for 2026!!

“The Hope Pack” are here again for the third time in 12 months. I am sure as I walked through the door of The Oval I heard the walls whisper “Welcome Home “ because that’s exactly what it feels like to stay at the cottage. It’s a real ‘Home from Home’. Everything you need is at hand and the standard of cleanliness is absolutely second to none. Well done team! Thank you for the recommendation of Reeves Restaurant. Great food and atmospheric, it’s definitely worth a visit for future visitors but do book in advance. Thank you again Lucy and team for Making our third stay at The Oval as memorable, welcoming and relaxing as our stays in 2024. Deb, Ian & Nora

Thank you so much for letting us stay in this absolutely magical house in a total gem of a village! The Oval is a total treat – the pictures online don’t do justice to what a special and comfortable house it is. The house looked amazing from when we first ducked (!) through the front door! Everything you could ever need is thoughtfully provided. We have really loved our week here and we definitely be back. The Forresters and Luttrell Arms are great pubs serving good food. The Deli has not helped our bank balance!! And the walking in the area is simply stunning. There is a brilliant circular walk to do at Dunkery Beacon, which we highly recommend. There’s a great ridge walk along Grabbist Hill and a good circular walk from Porlock Weir inland (steep hill!) and back for a pint in The Ship via the Coleridge Way. We were incredibly lucky with the weather, but The Oval would be a brilliant base whatever the conditions. Looking forward to coming back and thank you again!

We had a lovely time at The Oval. A very well-equipped kitchen meant we could cook in when we wanted to, although we found plenty of places to eat in Dunster (Castle Coffee House, Tessa’s Tearoom and Reeves restaurant) and drink (The Stag’s Head pub opposite the cottage and Forresters Arms down the road). The Oval was spotlessly clean and super cosy – thank you for leaving logs and kindling wood which was much appreciated. We also made the most of Netflix on the one day we didn’t feel like going out. We loved the West Somerset Steam Railway and took a couple of trips on that for some nostalgia, and Dunster Castle was enjoyable, especially the tearoom! Would recommend a trip to Lynton and Lynmouth on the A39 for great views of the countryside and the Blue Ball at Countisbury was a good half way stop for a meal. Thank you for helping with our special requests, and for being on hand when we lost the key (ooops!). We will recommend and plan to return to get back on the train!.
