Finchale Abbey Touring Park
Finchale Caravan Park, Brasside, Durham DH1 5SH, UK
Adults-only touring park by the ruins of Finchale Priory, 3 miles from Durham
About Finchale Abbey Touring Park
Finchale Abbey Touring Park occupies a genuinely lovely spot on the banks of the River Wear, with medieval priory ruins as a backdrop and sandstone cliffs rising behind. The adults-only policy keeps things peaceful year-round, and pitches—grass touring spots with 10-amp hook-ups, hardstanding for motorhomes, or fully serviced pitches with mains water and 16-amp power—either face the river or the ruins themselves.
The facilities are well maintained, including clean shower blocks and a small farm shop and café selling sandwiches, cakes and Finchale honey. Dogs are welcome throughout, with a dedicated walking area and riverside paths leading directly to Durham, roughly three miles south. The setting and tranquillity make it a strong choice for couples and retired tourers, though some may find the lack of a pool or playground limits appeal if you're after more on-site activity. Wi-Fi is available, and the site stays open all year.

What visitors say
Wonderful, peaceful campsite. Facilities were well maintained and the setting is beautiful. Staff were friendly. The walk in the woods and around the abbey were lovely and a 4 mile walk takes you into the centre of Durham.

Set in such a beautiful area and with a view of the Abby but that's it! EVERY pitch is sloped and can't even level up with chocks. Spend some time and effort and make it level for people to stay. Shower/toilet block very clean. No staff about either. For the price it's not worth it.

The shower and toilet block was lovely, very clean, warm and had lots of cubicles and showers. Personally, I didn't like the site. It felt very crowded with touring vans, wood lodges and a couple of shepherd's huts all crammed in with very little space between. It also felt a bit impersonal with the online booking quickly followed with about 4 or 5 emails with rules and information such as the code which is used to gain entry to the site and the shower block, so we never dealt with an actual person.
