Tent-friendly South Downs site by the Cuckmere, 8 miles from Eastbourne

About Alfriston Camping Park

Alfriston Camping Park occupies a lovely spot on the edge of its namesake village, tucked beside the River Cuckmere within the South Downs National Park. This straightforward, tent-focused site has built a loyal following among walkers tackling the South Downs Way and cyclists passing through the Downs, drawn by flat, well-drained pitches and an easy stroll into Alfriston for its clutch of pubs, tearooms and the National Trust's fourteenth-century clergy house.

Facilities are kept simple but well maintained—modern shower and toilet blocks, a small shop for essentials—and the open grass fields welcome tents, camper vans and touring caravans. Dogs are allowed on leads, making this a popular base for downland rambles. The coast at Cuckmere Haven and the Seven Sisters is a short walk or drive away, while Eastbourne sits around 20 minutes by car.

Some visitors note the site can feel a touch tired in places, but its position and walker-friendly vibe keep regulars coming back, especially those breaking longer South Downs routes into manageable sections.

This campsite is a top choice for camping around London. It’s only about an hour and a half drive, yet it offers a truly immersive outdoor experience. The campfire service is excellent, and the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. The only downside is that there’s no lighting in the shower area, but it’s a minor inconvenience. Both hiking and kayaking are very convenient from the campsite, which made our stay even more enjoyable. At night, you can hear owls calling while enjoying a beautiful starry sky by the fire. In the morning, you wake up to the sounds of lambs, seagulls, and pigeons. Many thanks again to the staff for such a great experience.

Lovely campsite set in a valley part of which is quite sloping. Good facilities although hot water for washing dishes was a little cool. The showers were very powerful and at a nice temperature. Toilet block was kept very clean.

Very well run site. Lively sections especially up the very top, but all music switched off at a reasonable time. We had a large group of students and they really enjoyed the atmosphere. Great selection of pubs -5 minute walk with multiple food options.

This is in an amazing setting and actually had some flat ground unlike a few other sites. It’s fuss free and you may or may not get checked in. The showers and toilets are good enough. There are no other facilities and local dining is quite expensive so plan ahead. My review is based on my experience during an April stay when the campsite was very quiet. I’d suggest that in peak season it may well not be quite as nice when the toilets and showers become crowded and the no pitches approach (lively in an empty site) could cause some chaos.
