Fiskerton
Riverside village on Lincoln's doorstep

Fiskerton is a small village on the north bank of the River Witham, about six miles east of Lincoln in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire. It's a place best known to walkers and archaeologists rather than tourists, with the river forming a natural boundary along its southern edge and open fenland and farmland stretching away to the north.
The village has an unusually rich past for its size. Excavations here uncovered an Iron Age wooden causeway and votive offerings including the Witham Shield, now in the British Museum, while other finds are on display at The Collection museum in Lincoln. The Grade I listed Church of St Clement has 11th-century origins, and just outside the village a memorial marks the site of RAF Fiskerton, a Bomber Command station active during the Second World War. Today Fiskerton is a peaceful commuter village, its main appeal being the countryside and river paths on its doorstep.
Getting to Fiskerton
Fiskerton has its own request-stop railway station on the Lincoln to Nottingham line, making it possible to reach the village by train, though services are limited. By road it sits just off the B1190, roughly a 15-minute drive from Lincoln, with the A46 and A15 both within easy reach for onward travel across Lincolnshire.
Best time to visit Fiskerton
Late spring through early autumn suits Fiskerton best, when the riverside paths and Limewoods trails are at their most walkable and the meadows along the Witham are full of wildlife. Winter can bring wet, muddy conditions underfoot given the low-lying, riverside terrain, so sturdy footwear is worth packing whatever the season.
Where to stay in Fiskerton
All hotels in Fiskerton →About staying in Fiskerton
Fiskerton has no hotels of its own, so anyone wanting a proper bed for the night is best placed in nearby Lincoln, just six miles to the west. Lincoln offers a full range of accommodation, from budget and mid-range chain hotels near the train station and retail park to more characterful independent stays around the cobbled Bailgate and cathedral quarter, many within walking distance of the castle, cathedral and the city's restaurants and shops.
Staying in Lincoln puts Fiskerton and the wider Witham valley within a short drive or even a train ride, since Fiskerton has its own small request-stop station on the Lincoln to Nottingham line. This makes it easy to split a stay between city sightseeing and quieter days out walking the riverside paths, the Viking Way or the ancient Limewoods, without needing to move accommodation.
Travellers who prefer to stay closer to the countryside itself might look at guesthouses, farm stays or B&Bs in the villages strung along the Witham valley, such as Reepham, Cherry Willingham, Bardney or Woodhall Spa a little further afield, several of which have a village pub serving food. These give a quieter, more rural base while keeping Lincoln's attractions within easy reach for a day trip.

Camping in Fiskerton
All campsites in Fiskerton →About camping in Fiskerton
Fiskerton and the surrounding Witham valley offer a genuinely rural backdrop for a camping trip, with flat riverside meadows, ancient Limewoods and the Viking Way footpath all close at hand. As with anywhere in England, wild camping without the landowner's permission is not legal, so a stay here means booking into a proper campsite or securing permission in advance rather than pitching up on the riverbank or in the woods.
The valley's terrain is gentle and low-lying, following the flat course of the River Witham between Lincoln and the fens further east, which makes for easy cycling and walking between pitches and the surrounding villages. It also means the ground can turn soft and waterlogged after wet weather, so this part of Lincolnshire suits camping best from late spring through to early autumn, when the paths are drier and the long evenings make the most of the riverside scenery. Midsummer is particularly rewarding, with the meadows along the Witham full of wildlife and the woodland trails at their greenest.
Campsites directly in Fiskerton itself are limited given its size, but the wider area around Lincoln and the Witham valley has a reasonable spread of options, from simple touring and tent pitches to glamping in pods, shepherd's huts or bell tents for those who'd rather skip the tent-pitching altogether. Basing a stay in or near Lincoln also means easy access to shops and supplies, useful for topping up on essentials between days spent exploring the Limewoods or following the Viking Way along the river.
Given the modest choice of sites immediately around the village, it is worth checking availability and facilities carefully before booking, particularly for anything requiring hookups or larger units, and to always confirm with the site directly that wild camping is not an option they permit informally, since the legal position in England requires the landowner's consent everywhere outside a handful of specific areas of Dartmoor.
