About The Sanctuary Cornwall

The Sanctuary sits high above the village of Golant, on twelve acres of woodland, pasture and permaculture gardens overlooking the protected upper reaches of the Fowey Estuary, around two miles upstream from Fowey itself. It is run as an off-grid eco lodge, generating its own power and drawing heavily on the surrounding land, though the standard of comfort inside belies that self-sufficiency.

Four individually styled en-suite bedrooms make up the main house, each with estuary views and its own terrace, alongside a separate off-grid pod for guests wanting to be closer to the woodland itself. Breakfast draws on the property's own gardens and local producers, and the site backs onto direct access for kayaking, paddleboarding and the South West Coast Path.

It suits visitors keen on a quieter, more nature-focused stay than a hotel in Fowey itself can offer, with the trade-off of a short drive or riverside walk into town for dinner; the setting and the sense of being genuinely away from it all are the main draw, and the lodge operates seasonally between April and November.

A hidden gem for those looking for a quiet retreat in Cornwall. The Sanctuary is lovely, sustainable, completely off grid place with amazing views on river Fowey, and wonderful local hosts - Karen & Dave, who care about environment and do their best to protect it. We’ve had a relaxing weekend away and embraced the slow living concept it offers. Can’t recommend it enough 💙

What an amazing place , it truly is a sanctuary. Stunning setting with the rooms overlooking a beautiful view of the river , each with their own balcony. My sister and I shared a twin room and we were really impressed with the quality furnishings and attention to detail. It was very clean with everything provided. Breakfast was delicious and prepared by Karen. She and Dave were brilliant hosts , super friendly and extremely knowledgeable about walks in the area. They were lovely and it was a real pleasure to meet them. The meadows surrounding their home were beautiful and the pond and decking area were the perfect place to sit and get the last of the evening sun. Even Woody , their pet collie was a lovely boy ! We would definitely like to return as it was such a stunning and tranquil place - perfect to relax for a few days. We ate in the evenings at the local pub ,The Fishermans Arms , a short walk away , and thought the food was excellent , the staff very friendly and a great atmosphere. We really enjoyed our time at The Sanctuary and would recommend it highly.

We stayed for two blissful nights at the Sanctuary. Our room, Maple, was beautiful and comfortable and the view of the estuary, from our balcony, was stunning! Totally at peace with all the nature around, sat listening to birds singing, bees buzzing and cows lowing, perfect relaxation. Our breakfasts were delicious and wholsome, with a strong focus on local produce, which was great and the conversation flowed freely around the super sociable kitchen. We hope to return one day but until then enjoy your very special sanctuary, keep well and happy 🙂

Just wanted to leave a note to say that a friend and I had such a beautiful stay at The Sanctuary. It's a gorgeous spot run by wonderful hosts who were so kind and generous and made the trip extra memorable. Lovely accommodation in stunning surroundings and so many special places to discover on the doorstep. Can't recommend this place enough.
