Alpacas, goats, Shetland ponies… the nippers are likely to love this one (to be fair, it's likely the grownups will love it too, but feel free to make out it's for their benefit if it earns you brownie points). This family-run site sits within a 12-acre property just 10 minutes from Henfield, keeping guest numbers deliberately minimal so everyone gets oodles of peace and space.

It's properly back-to-basics – no toilets or showers here, though there is a chemical disposal point with recycled rainwater. Come armed with all your kit and a barbecue if you fancy cooking over the coals, and don't miss the fresh free-range eggs from the farm's happy hens for breakfast. When you can't face cooking, the local pub's a 20-minute walk away (perfect for working up an appetite) or nip to Hurstpierpoint for takeaways. Beyond the animal antics, you're minutes from scenic South Downs rambles and 20 from Brighton's beaches.
