Hebridean Views - The Drift Shepherds Hut

Photo: The Drift Shepherds Hut

The Drift is a single-bedroom shepherd's hut on croft land above Gairloch, with everything you need compressed into one compact, heated space. A rough track leads to the property; once there, you'll find a double bed, a shower room, and an open-plan living and kitchen area warmed by an electric fire. Electricity, bed linen, towels and wifi are included, and there's a gravelled patio with seating outside. One dog can stay, provided it remains on a lead in this sheep country.

The west coast village of Gairloch lies five miles away, with shops, a supermarket, restaurants and cafes. Boat trips for fishing and sightseeing depart from there throughout the season. The immediate surroundings offer coastal walks and sandy beaches; further afield are Inverewe Gardens, Loch Maree, the Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve, and the mountain scenery around Torridon. Ullapool is within a day trip. The hut suits couples or solo travellers seeking a quiet retreat with genuine Highland views.

A brilliant spot for a quiet escape for two. The shepherd’s hut is superbly kitted out – the kitchen has absolutely everything you could need for cooking and serving up. The bathroom is good, the bed and bedding are excellent, and we slept wonderfully. You get an ocean view not just from the middle of the hut, but even from the bed. There’s garden furniture right outside, and nothing beats that first morning coffee with the sea stretched out in front of you. All around are hills and pastures, and every now and then a sheep wanders over and gives a little bleat. If you love seclusion, nature, and still want your creature comforts, this little hut is exactly the one.

Immaculately clean, tidy and comfortable place to spend a perfectly restful and peaceful weekend, or a week. Fantastic hosts who are both friendly, welcoming, professional and accommodating. We couldn’t recommend the Drift more if we tried. The views are spectacular and the locals are so friendly and helpful. Danny and Julie are absolute stars and you will not regret staying here. Ten stars not five.
