Photo: Kirkstone Lodge

Kirkstone Lodge sits in Inveruglass, a quiet hamlet within the Cairngorms National Park, four miles from Kingussie. Views stretch across open countryside down the Glen towards the River Spey and tree-lined mountains. The property is accessed via a rough track and stands alone, giving you complete privacy with grounds that include a gravelled yard, lawn, seating areas, and a hot tub.

Inside, there are three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The ground floor holds a living and dining room with woodburner and TV, a kitchen with two electric ovens and dishwasher, utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer, one kingsize bedroom with ensuite shower, and a second bedroom with bunk beds and a family bathroom. Upstairs, the third bedroom is a kingsize with a sofa bed and ensuite bathroom. Bed linen, towels, Wi-Fi and electricity are included. The kitchen is equipped for self-catering; a travel cot and highchair are available on request.

Walking and mountain biking trails begin on the doorstep. Loch Insh, nearby, offers water sports and swimming. Within reach are skiing at Cairngorm, the funicular railway to Ptarmigan Top, the Highland Wildlife Park, and the Highland Folk Museum. Kingussie has pubs, restaurants and shops; Inverness, Loch Ness and Fort William are all within reasonable driving distance. One pet is welcome. Smoking is not permitted.

Stayed at this property many times over the years and have always had a great time in a lovely location. However, the most recent trip changed all my thoughts about the place when the owners decided to change ridiculous amounts for linen and towels which they claim were stained to am extent they were not able to be cleaned. They even charged for their dish towels and bath mat to be replaced. Never heard of the like of this in all my time visiting places. A money making scam to which they should be ashamed of. Property itself is in need of updating throughout with issues which you wouldn't be expecting. Completely unsuitable for young children. We won't be back and wouldn't recommend to anyone.

Stayed at Kirkstone Lodge for a week in June as a family of four and one dog. The Lodge itself is well presented, modern and clean with everything you might need for your stay. Had a small issue with a wasps nest which was dealt with promptly by the lovely caretaker. The location is fantastic for Loch Insh Watersports centre, all Aviemore outdoor activities and of course the forest right on your doorstep. I highly recommend hiking into Glen Feshie if looking for a break from the Munros too!

Just came home after the most wonderful week here! I searched the web for days to find the perfect place to stay and I was not disappointed. Even though it sleeps 8, it wasn't too big for just my husband and I (and our 2 dogs). There is so much to do in the local area, and just short drives away. We could have easily spent a second week without running out of things to do. The house was exactly what we wanted and wouldn't have changed a thing! We will absolutely be going back!!

We booked Kirkstone Lodge for an end of year work review, and decided we would pamper ourselves a bit too and Kirkstone didn't disappoint. We enjoyed the real log fire, the hot tub, the sauna, the well equipped kitchen, the power showers, the comfy beds with blackout blinds, the big TV and DVD, and the location which is really close to some great walks. It was also great to have wifi and plenty of off road parking. Kirkstone offered us everything we needed and more and we look forward to returning sometime, or maybe trying one of the great looking other properties. With HUGE appreciation for the hot tub and fire which were two of our non negotiables for where we chose to stay. Would wholeheartedly recommend.
