Stag’s Hide

Photo: Pam Crawford

A hot tub on the property is the first thing to notice about Stag's Hide. Built as a gamekeeper's lodge over a century ago and now thoroughly updated, this two-bedroom cottage sits among woodland and open pasture in the heart of the Cairngorms, with the distillery at Kinrara within walking distance. The interior blends older character—a log burner anchors the open-plan living space—with modern additions: fitted kitchen, Sonos speakers, Smart TVs in both bedrooms, and rainfall shower in the bathroom. One bedroom has a super-king bed that can split into twins; the other a standard king. Linen, towels and Wi-Fi are included.

The cottage sleeps four and is yours alone. One dog can stay free. It's a compact space but equipped for families or groups wanting a genuine break from routines, though staying connected is straightforward if needed. The setting means you're more likely to spot deer and pheasants than passing traffic. Winter brings access to Cairngorm's ski slopes; spring and summer open up hillwalking and cycling from the doorstep. Local breweries and other distilleries lie within a short drive. Smoking is not permitted inside.

We stayed at Stag's Hide over Easter weekend with our 8-year-old daughter and it was the perfect Highland base. The setting is genuinely stunning. You wake up to panoramic views of the Cairngorm mountains through those big glass windows, and the sunrises flooding the cottage with light each morning were something we'll remember for a long time. In the evenings, the hot tub under the stars became our favorite way to wind down after full days exploring. We did have an issue with the heating and hot water not working when we first arrived, which could have been stressful. But Annabel and Colleen were incredible. They were responsive, attentive, and had a service person out as quickly as possible to get everything sorted. The way they handled it honestly made us feel more looked after, not less. That kind of hosting makes all the difference when you're traveling with a young child. The location is ideal for families. Highland Wildlife Park is a 5-minute drive, Rothiemurchus and Loch an Eilein are 10 minutes away, and Aviemore town is close enough for supplies without being on top of you. The estate itself is peaceful and private, with sheep wandering right outside on the Kinrara Estate. We'd come back in a heartbeat. Thank you Annabel and Colleen for a beautiful stay.

What an absolute find as it seems to normally be booked up. Great cottage, tastefully decorated, all the equipment you could need, and beds really comfortable. Linen and towels all top notch. The hot tub was so good, and well maintained. This is one of the best self catering cottages we’ve been to. Dog friendly. We were there in November and it was cold outside. The cottage was consistently toastie and warm. Communication with owners great. Would highly recommend.

Lovely little self contained hide away with a hot tub. We had a week here relaxing locally and enjoyed the activities with our younger lads. I would recommend the water sports at loch insh but keep an eye on your dogs as ours was badly bitten by black fly's or nagts there. The quad biking is fun but goes quick. The town had an Aldi, eating out can be expensive. The local fuel station is very expensive. We found an Asda on the way home for 18p a litre cheaper.

Luxury self catering accommodation suitable for those that seek tranquility and access from the front door to great walks or cycling routes. Dog friendly, only 5 minutes drive from the centre of Aviemore.
