About The Chequers Inn
Tucked into the countryside near Rookley, The Chequers Inn offers camping alongside a proper pub experience. The food draws consistent praise – particularly the Sunday carvery – and the spacious play area (including soft play) keeps children happily occupied while parents enjoy a pint. With friendly staff and good value for money, it's a relaxed base for exploring the island's walking trails and nearby attractions, from sailing and cycling to beaches and market towns.
Though reviews occasionally mention the food can be inconsistent, the overall package works well for families and walkers alike. Electric grass and gravel pitches start from around £20, and the pub's own facilities mean you've always got somewhere warm to retreat to. Dogs are welcome year-round, and the site's small scale keeps things peaceful despite its central island location.

What visitors say
I am gluten free and they were just amazing with me. We had evening meals here and they were both knowledgeable and sympathetic. They remembered us when we turned up for our meal on the second night, remembered what drinks we ordered and what wine we had. I cannot fault them - outstanding! They are also part of an equestrian centre which is just across from the hotel and the staff there were just as amazing as the hotel. I went riding there on a lesson and haven't ridden for years. They were just lovely with me. We will be back.

Lovely overnight stay. Nothing was too much trouble. All the staff were lovely and friendly. Chequers breakfast was delicious. Room quaint but had everything needed including fans during the heatwave. Beautiful setting and view from my room stunning.

We didn’t stay, we had the most amazing Sunday carvery. The amount of meat you got and quality of vegetables and variety you had was amazing. every time I come over I always make sure we have a meal here, I definitely recommend this place. The staff are really friendly and always asking if we are ok and if we need any drinks. Do yourself a favour and book a meal here you won’t be disappointed.

I'll start with a description of room #2. It's no more than two meters high: literally, if you're taller, you won't be able to stand upright. In some places, the ceiling is even lower, so even if you're not very tall, you risk hitting your head. This is the smallest room I've ever stayed in. The staff isn't very attentive and doesn't explain all the dining options. We arrived on a Sunday, when the hotel offers a buffet in addition to the main menu. No one informed us of this, so we ended up ordering overly salty dishes from the menu, even though we would have happily opted for the buffet for variety. We had to wait 20 minutes for the waiter to take our order—quite a while, considering the room wasn't fully booked. The cleanliness of the dishes is also questionable: there were drink stains on the teaspoons. The location isn't ideal. The hotel is located near a busy road with cars driving 24/7. The windows overlook the roadway, beyond which lies a field with horses. Bottom line: this establishment is worth visiting on a Sunday for the buffet for £23. If you can book rooms #1 or #3, you can stay overnight. Room #2 is only worth staying in if you're traveling alone and are short. This is my subjective assessment of this establishment.
