About Sun Inn

Anyone planning a few days of walking or exploring the Yorkshire Dales could do worse than base themselves at Sun Inn, a hotel with just 11 rooms on Market Street in Kirkby Lonsdale. It suits those who want a proper inn experience rather than a big hotel: a bar with real ales, a restaurant known for hearty roasts and satisfying breakfasts, and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere rather than anything formal or corporate.

Rooms are en-suite with thoughtful extra touches and come in family options where needed, and the property spreads across two floors. Guests get free WiFi, room service, drinks in the room, and practical extras such as packed lunches, laundry service and luggage storage. There's also a kitchen, snack bar, outdoor seating, and an electric vehicle charge point, plus meeting rooms for those combining business with a stay. Staff are consistently described as friendly, attentive and professional, which goes some way to explaining the cosy, looked-after feel of the place.

Parking is chargeable and nearby rather than on site, worth factoring in if arriving by car. Otherwise the location does much of the work: Devil's Bridge and the surrounding riverside walks are close by, and the inn sits within easy reach of the Yorkshire Dales, with cycling routes, walking country, golf, and other pubs and restaurants all nearby. Pets are welcome too, making it a practical choice for those travelling with a dog as well as a rucksack.

Had a fantastic stay at The Sun Inn in Kirkby Lonsdale — easily one of the best country pub stays we’ve had. The room was clean, well appointed, and had lots of thoughtful touches that made it feel genuinely comfortable rather than just standard. The staff were a real highlight — warm, welcoming and attentive throughout without ever being over the top. Great atmosphere, great food, and a place that gets the balance just right between relaxed pub and boutique stay. We genuinely considered extending our stay, which says it all. Would absolutely return.

Our overnight stay at the Sun Inn was a wonderful experience! Everyone from the cleaning ladies to the receptionists were genuine, helpful, very friendly and serviceminded. All the rooms I saw were quaint, well equipped and cozy. We were even fortunate to be upgraded to room number 12 that had a fantastic view over the Church and graveyard full of daffodils! The bed was extremely comfortable and the big bathtub was the icing on the cake for me. Tasty breakfast as well. We’d love to come back some day.

This is a really lovely place to stay if visiting the area. Kirkby Lonsdale is set in beautiful countryside with Ruskin's View being a real stunner. The staff at the Sun Inn were very welcoming being both friendly and genuine. The rooms are very inviting with a clever use of space with a really comfortable bed and bedding. As for the meal we had, well it was really exceptional. The roast sirloin of beef was perfect and so tender and tasty.. they obviously have a top notch chef and team in the kitchen. Highly recommended as a place o stay and eat..

Dined here for lunch on Easter Sunday. The atmosphere was nice despite it being a very busy period. The food was also really tasty and priced reasonably for a special meal. The reason for the two stars was unfortunately there was concerningly poor care taken around management of allergies. The allergen menu was not up to date (both the cauliflower main and the bread board were listed as free from milk, but were served with a yoghurt drizzle and dairy butter respectively). When we mentioned this, we were first told we had misread it (we hadn't which they agreed when we showed them) and then we were told it was marked as free of the allergen because it could, if needed, be served without the dairy. This is not how an allergen menu works - if this was the case, it should have been clearly stated that it was free of milk only if served without yoghurt drizzle or butter and it didn't mention that and it was only on our direct enquiry that they confirmed there was indeed dairy on those dishes. (Incidentally, when we asked the waitress to check if the yoghurt drizzle was dairy, she asked another waitress who didn't know and suggested asking the chef, to which the first waitress responded "I can't be arsed with this" - not very professional). Further to this, for desert we ordered a dairy-free sorbet for the toddler with severe (life- threatening) dairy allergy which the service team had been aware of, but were served with dairy ice cream. This could have been serious had we not noticed when it was served. The team acknowledged and apologised, and as a gesture removed the sorbet and service charge from our bill, but it was a disappointing experience all the same. I wouldn't usually write a review but I would recommend avoiding if you have an allergy until they can demonstrate that they take allergies seriously and update their training and allergen menu.
