Longstock
Chalk streams, water gardens and quiet Hampshire village life

Longstock is a small conservation village on the western bank of the River Test, just north of Stockbridge and on the southern edge of the 4,000-acre Leckford Estate. With a population of only around 450, it is one of those quietly perfect Hampshire villages: thatched cottages, a church, a celebrated pub, and chalk-stream water on almost every side. The Test itself splits into several channels as it passes the village, feeding water meadows and gardens that have made this stretch of the valley famous among gardeners and anglers alike.
The whole parish sits inside the Test Valley, one of the most protected and picturesque corners of Hampshire, where the underlying chalk keeps the rivers running clear and cool all year. Longstock has been part of the Leckford Estate, owned by the John Lewis Partnership since 1929, which has shaped much of what visitors come to see here today, from the working farmland to the famous water garden created by Spedan Lewis himself.
Getting to Longstock
Longstock lies just off the A3057 between Stockbridge and Andover, around 9 miles south-west of Winchester and roughly 15 miles north-west of Southampton, making it an easy detour from the M3. The nearest mainline station is Winchester, with regular services to London Waterloo in around an hour; Andover station also has connections into the network. From either station, Longstock is best reached by car or taxi, as the village itself has no rail link and bus services are limited, typical of this rural stretch of Hampshire.
Best time to visit Longstock
Late spring through to early autumn is the classic window, when the water gardens are open, the mayfly hatch draws fly fishers to the Test, and the water meadows are at their greenest. May and June bring the famous mayfly season on the chalk streams, while September still offers mild weather and quieter paths before the gardens close for winter. Winter has its own appeal too, with bare trees around the water channels and crisp walks along the Test Way, though several of the main attractions reduce their opening days out of season.
Where to stay in Longstock
All hotels in Longstock →About staying in Longstock
Hotel options directly in Longstock are limited to one standout: The Peat Spade Inn, a restored country pub with nine en-suite rooms in the heart of the village, popular with walkers and anglers drawn by the River Test on its doorstep. Its rooms come with Egyptian cotton sheets, Smart TVs and Nespresso machines, and its bar and dining room double as the village's main social hub.
For more choice, Stockbridge is under a mile away and has a longer High Street lined with inns, pubs with rooms and small hotels, many of them geared towards the fly-fishing trade that has made the town famous. Winchester, around 9 miles east, offers a much wider range of hotels, from boutique townhouses to larger chain options, along with excellent rail links to London. Andover, roughly the same distance in the other direction, provides a practical, budget-friendly base with easy access to the A303 and A34.
Wherever you stay, Longstock's appeal is as a base for slow days beside the water: a night at the Peat Spade puts you within walking distance of the water garden, the Test Way footpath and Stockbridge's fishing shops, while staying in Stockbridge or Winchester trades a little of that immediacy for more choice of places to eat, drink and sleep.

Camping in Longstock(1)
All campsites in Longstock →About camping in Longstock
Longstock sits in one of Hampshire's prettiest river valleys, but formal campsites in the immediate village are scarce, as much of the surrounding land belongs to the working Leckford Estate. As in the rest of England, wild camping without the landowner's explicit permission is not legal here, so visitors should look to established sites in the wider Test Valley and around Stockbridge and Andover rather than pitching beside the river itself.
The chalk downland and water meadows around Longstock make for gentle, well-drained walking country, and nearby campsites tend to combine easy access to the Test Way footpath with proximity to Stockbridge's shops, pubs and fishing beats. Fields here drain quickly after rain thanks to the chalk beneath, which helps keep pitches usable through a typical Hampshire spring and autumn, though conditions are, as ever, at their best from May to September when days are longer and the water gardens and farm shops nearby are in full swing.
For those who prefer a roof over their heads without booking a hotel, glamping and shepherd's hut style stays have become increasingly common across this part of Hampshire, offering a comfortable middle ground between a tent and a village inn. Given how compact Longstock is, campers and glampers alike will usually find themselves basing a stay slightly outside the village and driving or walking in for the water garden, the river, and a meal at the Peat Spade or in Stockbridge, rather than expecting an on-site pitch in the conservation village itself.
