About Walpole Bay Hotel

Walpole Bay Hotel is a large Edwardian hotel on the Cliftonville seafront, overlooking the tidal pool at Walpole Bay a short walk east of central Margate. Family-run for decades, it has kept a striking collection of period features, from its original 1920s birdcage lift to a small museum of seaside memorabilia on site.

Rooms vary considerably in size and outlook, with the best looking directly over the bay, and the hotel's slightly time-warped character has made it something of a cult destination in its own right.

Its quieter Cliftonville setting and lower rates than the Old Town suit visitors after a characterful, unpretentious stay with easy access to a quieter stretch of beach, at the cost of a short walk into the town centre.

We had two lovely nights at this quaint, quirky and beautiful hotel. In each corridor and around every bend there is history, from family wedding/christianing gowns over many years to old radios, Kitchen items, dolls houses, clothes. It is amazing!!! Our room was on the corner with sea view, very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was delicious. All staff were very friendly and professional. We will be back!

The Walpole Bay Hotel is a unique experience not to be missed, along with the museum element of the place. It is from a bygone era, in a good way, when the customer & service were important. We had a lovely superior double room with a balcony overlooking the sea. Jane, the owner, greeted all the guests each morning at the delicious breakfast, in the period dinning room & regaled us with hilarious stories of days past. We will be returning! It is well placed for visits to Broadstairs, Ramsgate & Sandwich. Although evening meal is not provided, takeaways can be ordered in & eaten in the lovely dinning room.

I visited the Walpole Bay Hotel for an afternoon tea for my godmother's birthday. The food and service were excellent and the hotel itself is clean and full of history. The historic lift is fun to ride and clearly well maintained. The museum is interesting and the toilets are immaculate. The manager also showed me a particular piece of history that I was interested in which was a nice touch. The silver tea service was beautiful too. We had a lovely time and have in the past too. It is especially nice to sit on the veranda outside with all the plants in the warmer weather but we couldn't do that this time.

Didn’t stay here but came for afternoon tea which was fantastic! Excellent service friendly staff and even met the owner who stopped by to ask if we were enjoying our food. (Which we definitely were 😃) Highly recommend, full of character and the food is delicious- very reasonable too
