What visitors say
A really fascinating place to visit. Would recommend going on a dry day as you really should take the time to explore the gardens. Whilst the house is going through an extensive restoration internally, it is easy to imagine the splendour that it once was, and set within a truly beautiful setting. The quarry gardens are home to some remarkable trees and plants that inspire and feed your imagination. Quite a unique place and well worth exploring. With cafes and toilets located throughout the site, you're never too far from either. Great staff once again who are really friendly and quite rightly proud of the place. Very helpful with first time visitors with recommendations. Highly recommend taking the time to visit.

An excellent few hours out. We came on Sunday when it was slightly rainy and basically had the place to ourselves. The hall is nice but there's not much inside - takes about 20-30 mins to wander round looking at the rooms. The gardens and quarry and excellent. The quarry especially is beautiful - it's full of exotic plants like the giant rhubarb. After the quarry you can find the old castle and explore the basement and towers. There's a nice walk around Crag Wood, which takes about an hour (it says 2 hours on the signs). There's also a good second hand bookshop at the entrance.

Beautiful property and garden lovingly looked after by English Heritage. The quarry garden is stunning and the house and castle have so much history. Book onto one of the tours to get a bit more insight into this place, whether it's the WW2, Behind closed doors or as I did the LJ Ross book tour - you'll love it! 🩷

The atmosphere are peaceful and there are plenty to explore, from the impressive architecture to the stunning landscaped grounds. The staff are friendly and helpful, making the experience even more enjoyable. It is a great day out for both adults and children and I would highly recommend visiting to anyone interested in history, nature and photography.
