About Byreside Caravan Site
Tucked into the Derwent Valley at Hamsterley Mill, this small, family-run site has been welcoming caravans, motorhomes and tents to the same working farm for years. The atmosphere is genuinely rural rather than commercial – around thirty touring pitches spread across gently sloping grass, with seasonal vans discreetly sited at the edge. Facilities are straightforward: a heated, well-kept shower block with accessible provision, water points, chemical disposal and motorhome services, but no shop or bar. Mobile signal can be patchy in the valley dip, which suits the many regulars just fine.
The draw here is countryside access at a fair price. The Derwent Walk and Waskerley Way deliver miles of level, traffic-free cycling on old railway lines, while the North Pennines rise to the west. Beamish and Gibside are both around eight miles off, Hadrian's Wall forty minutes by car. Newcastle is a straightforward drive or Metro ride away. Open all year – rare for County Durham – and popular enough that booking ahead in school holidays is wise.

What visitors say
My family and I recently stayed at Byreside Caravan Site on our first trip with our Campervan. We would highly recommend staying here. The surroundings were peaceful , the facilities were clean and staff, very friendly. Not to mention the location was perfect, as it was within a 20-30 minute drive from major attractions. Overall a pleasant experience, at an excellent price. We will be back! Thank you.

Very reasonably priced site in a peaceful location and next to the Derwent Walk (old railway line). Facilities a bit basic and set just off the camping field but perfectly serviceable.

Very quiet site, some aircraft noise. Well layed out site 2 fields. Small toilet block, bit old but very clean. The old railway track runs right along side, (think it's cycle route 14)
