About Tolcarne Beach Colonial Restaurant and Rooms

Step straight from the door onto Tolcarne Beach, with coastal walking and cycling routes leading off in both directions, golf and fishing within easy reach, and watersports, pubs and restaurants dotted along the shore for whenever you fancy a change of scene. Newquay's wider entertainment options are also close at hand, making this a practical base for exploring the coast without needing a car for every outing, though free on-site parking is provided for those who bring one.

Tolcarne Beach Colonial Restaurant and Rooms pairs straightforward B&B accommodation with an on-site restaurant that looks out over the sea, particularly striking as the sun goes down. Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, free WiFi and in-room drinks, and breakfast is included to set guests up for a day on the coast. A 24-hour reception adds flexibility for early starts or late returns from the beach.

The restaurant itself is a strong point, with a varied menu that runs to genuine vegetarian and vegan choices alongside the usual fare, and food that's prepared fresh rather than an afterthought to the sea views. There's also a bar on site for a quieter evening in, and pets are welcome, so the whole household can settle in by the beach.

The moment we arrived, we were told there were no available seats and that if we wanted drinks, we would have to stand at the back and wait between an hour and an hour and a half for a table. This was surprising because the restaurant didn’t appear to be busy. While waiting, I took a walk around and noticed several empty tables. I asked another waitress, who immediately said, “Of course, you can sit there,” so we moved to the new table. While we were changing tables, our calamari had already been served. During those few moments, a seagull swooped in, ate some of it, and made a mess of the table. Another customer alerted us to what had happened. I informed the waitress, who then spoke to the manager. The manager’s response was that because we had “left the food unattended,” we would have to pay for it. This was completely unreasonable, as we were only moving to the table we had just been told we could use. We hadn’t simply abandoned our food. When I asked to speak with the manager, her attitude was extremely rude. She said that “everyone knows” about the seagulls in Cornwall, implying that because we weren’t local, we should have known better. As tourists visiting the area, we obviously wouldn’t be expected to know that, especially when we were in the middle of changing tables. Eventually, she agreed not to charge us for the ruined calamari, but only after an unnecessary argument. While the issue was eventually resolved, the manager’s attitude and lack of customer service were completely unacceptable and left a very poor impression.

Loved it. We stayed in a beach hut, which was stunning, with great views of the beach and sea. Going to bed to the sound of the waves..I don’t think I’ve ever slept so well. The staff were lovely, the food was very good, room service was great, and the room was very comfortable. It was a blessing that the room was dog friendly too!! I highly recommend this lovely hotel.

Called in previously over the last few years, returned this morning for breakfast. The food was absolutely superb as I’ve previously experienced here. Excellent vegetarian / vegan options. All staff members from reception to restaurant are amazingly good. This place is a real gem and one of the best restaurants we’ve visited anywhere in the world. Useful information, it appears dogs are allowed which is great if you have pooch and parking was available albeit down a steep and narrow drive. We passed our reg to the very friendly person in reception to avoid a parking charge.
