About Gidleigh Park A Relais and Chateaux Hotel

Deep in the Dartmoor countryside near Chagford, with Castle Drogo within reach, Gidleigh Park A Relais and Chateaux Hotel occupies a quiet setting of gardens and open moorland views. The grounds are well kept and make for good walking before or after a meal, and the surrounding lanes offer cycling and riding as well.

The hotel has 24 rooms, each en suite, with several guests noting the comfort and the views across the grounds from their windows. Facilities include a bar, garden and outdoor seating, room service with drinks available in-room, and practical extras such as laundry service, luggage storage, concierge help and childcare on request. Accessible rooms and free on-site parking, including a valet option, are also provided.

Food is the property's strongest suit, with a restaurant serving multi-course tasting menus built around local ingredients and breakfasts that guests single out for their quality. Staff are consistently described as attentive and genuinely welcoming. Beyond the grounds, Chagford and Castle Drogo are close by, with golf, fishing, walking and nearby pubs and restaurants filling out the rest of a stay.

Superb food, wonderful staff and a very pleasant, unfussy, relaxed atmosphere. All highly professional. The hotel's location is always going to be a challenge. Narrow Dartmoor roads lined with stone walls need some nerve. A few more encouraging hotel signs from Chagford would be helpful. Access to the open moor is not easy, but the delightful Jessica gave us directions for a driving short cut which meant that we spent our walking time on the moor itself, not on the lanes leading to it. The hotel grounds are lovely, but you could do with a few more benches to catch the afternoon and evening sunshine.

We have stayed at Gidleigh Park two times and it is simply a wonderful country home experience. The location, in the middle of Dartmoor National Park, is perfect for a quiet holiday and for those who love to hike. The hotel is small (24 rooms, I think) but the quality of the hotel, the rooms, and especially the service is 5 star. The rooms have a lot of character but are fully renovated, including the baths, and our room at least had a wonderful view. The public rooms and patios also are beautiful and full of light. The grounds are similarly beautiful, with a lovely park immediately around the hotel and then many acres of forest surrounding that. From there, you can hike up to the moor, which I did several times. The hotel staff are highly professional, well trained, hard-working, and exceptionally responsive to every need. The restaurant and bar also have top-tier food and service. Wonderful breakfast, outstanding wine and cocktail list, and a very high quality chef, although I think the new chef is getting his legs under him, as the overall menu and experience were not as exceptional in May 2026 as during our prior visit. In any event, Gidleigh Park is one of the finest country hotels we have visited anywhere.

My Wife and I visited for afternoon tea . 1st June 2026 We were lucky enough to win this afternoon tea when we bought raffle tickets at the local Chagford show last year 2025 . It was My wife’s birthday and it made for a fantastic experience , one that we would certainly not done, had we not won the voucher . We were amazed at the grounds and the hotel class and standards. Having driven down some very windy and narrow roads to get to this location and to find this gem of a place was just breathtaking . We thoroughly enjoyed every minute, the staff were so attentive and polite, nothing being too much trouble . We felt like lords and ladies sat there and were so glad we had decided to dress up a bit for the occasion , we enjoyed seeing how the other half live if you have got the money ! The food was so delicious, fresh, beautifully presented and we loved that as much as possible was locally sourced .We will never forget this day and we thank you so much for having us .

There is a reason this hotel restaurant has full tables on a Tuesday night. The food has always been incredibly good and the service exceptional but we haven’t visited for a while. We enjoyed the 7 course taster which was probably one of the best meals we have had at Gidleigh in the last 10 years. It was amazing. Congratulations to the chef.
