Oxbow Lodge sleeps ten in five 3ft bunk beds across a single ground-floor space that opens onto the adventure park at How Stean George. The main room has a woodburner, dining area and open kitchen where you can cook; beyond that, a private hot tub sits ready for ten. One dog stays free. Essentials like bed linen, towels, wi-fi and heating are covered, plus the first load of wood for the burner. Parking for two cars is on site, and you can store bikes here too.
Showers and toilets are in a separate external block shared with other lodge groups, with ten cubicles and ten facilities between them. There's an on-site restaurant if you'd rather not cook. The garden has a firepit and barbecue (shared with neighbouring properties), along with seating and a view down the gorge. A handful of steps lead into the garden from the lodge.
How Stean George itself offers caving, Via Ferrata, gorge walking and other outdoor pursuits; the Studfold Adventure Trail is nearby. The location appeals equally to groups after adventure activities and those wanting to soak in the hot tub between walks. Check-in is after 16:00, checkout before 10:00. No smoking inside.

We did the abseiling and gorge walk and we loved it. I was a bit nervous but instructor Mike was lovely and took good care of us. It felt safe and exciting at the same time. The gorge is beautiful and it’s a special experience to walk in there through the water. Would definitely recommend it. Lunch and coffee at the café afterwards, yummie food and lovely setting surrounded by nature and a view on the gorge.

We last came to How Stean Gorge back in early 2001 and this time we were back with our son and daughter. The gorge itself is as we remembered and is an excellent experience - highly recommended. The cafe has undergone significant changes since we were last here, and although ok, has lost a lot of the home cooked charm we remember from all those years ago. Overall, however, I would still recommend a visit if you are in the area.

An absolutely fantastic experience; it's a great adventure to walk along the rocky gorge and follow the river. The cave experience was lovely too! After our walk we had a nice cup of tea in the cafe to warm up and the views to the gorge from there were super beautiful!

Me and the boy have just had a class weekend here. We rented one of the cabins, the Loft, for two nights. Got there Friday night, settled in, slept well. Then the main event on Saturday morning. 0930 caving with Instructor Dave. Turns out just us in this session too so it was like I’d booked a private session. Our Harry was a little nervous but Dave was great with him from the beginning to the end. We had an epic time, exploring two caves all morning. We were both buzzing about it. We had a class lunch in the cafe, little man loved the glass floor over the gorge. Then after lunch we chilled in the loft cabin for a bit then went into the gorge and Tommy Taylor’s cave and counted 35 cave spiders! By the end of Saturday we were both knackered so slept well again. Sunday we checked out and went home via Stump Cross Caverns which are also worth a visit. What a weekend we had. Thanks to all the team at How Stean. We’ll be back for other activities for sure.
