Hudswell is a quiet village on the edge of Richmond, with open countryside around it and the walking and cycling routes of Swaledale within easy reach. A pub sits less than a mile away. St. Michael's Lodge occupies a converted church building in this setting, offering accommodation for groups of up to 17 people across six bedrooms.

The property is yours alone for the duration of your stay. Ground floor holds a large open living and dining room with a wood burner, plus a well-equipped kitchen for group cooking. All six bedrooms are upstairs or on the ground floor, each with its own en-suite shower room and a mix of bunk and double beds to suit different group compositions. Bed linen and towels are provided, as are wifi and electricity. The grounds include garden furniture, a barbecue, a fire pit, secure bike storage and parking for up to ten cars; there is also an electric car charging point. One well-behaved pet is welcome. The lodge is non-smoking throughout.

This works well for large family gatherings, walking parties, cycling groups or friends wanting shared space with private sleeping quarters. The communal areas mean everyone can cook and eat together, while the individual en-suites mean there is no queuing for bathrooms.

This is an incredible place to stay, the chuch has been converted with such a lot of thought, retaining many great architectural features whilst creating a cosy, comfortable base to explore from. We soon learnt that you need to really, really stoke the fire to get it to send heat around the radiators in the sitting/dining area and to keep the kitchen door closed (icy blast comes through). The place had been beautifully decorated for Christmas, it looked magical. It's well stocked with books & games, there are plenty of comfortable chairs, lots of firewood. The kitchen was well equipped and had most of the utensils we needed. The rooms and beds are very spacious with excellent en-suites and heating is easily controlled with a thermostat. The manager Melanie couldn't have been more helpful, when I contacted her about some glasses I'd left behind she kindly posted them to me at cost. I hope our walking group will be returning to St Michael's Lodge soon, it was a wonderful trip.

It was our first time at this location, the restored church come hostel was an amazing pleasant surprise and totally loved it. The communal area and kitchen is well equipped. Rooms are en-suite and dogs welcome. Mel who attended us was so warm and friendly and explained the restoration project. The small village of Hudswell will be very much in the map thanks to this lovely place. The hostel also have all modern facilities including electric car chargers, bike repair station and even a fire pit if u want to sit outside to see the stars and enjoy the Yorkshire moores. There are great walks from the hostel and the local pub is great! Highly recommended.
