The Legion

Orkney Islands

Photo: Google Maps

St Margaret's Hope on South Ronaldsay has drawn visitors for centuries—the village itself dates from the 13th century, and its harbour buildings from the 17th. It sits within easy reach of Kirkwall and Stromness on the Orkney Mainland, connected by the Churchill Barriers, and ferries from the Scottish north coast arrive here. The Legion stands in the conservation area at the village heart, a former British Legion building converted into a private holiday home with views across the harbour and sea.

The house has two bedrooms—one with a king-size bed, one with two singles—and two bathrooms, plus a study and an open-plan living space on the ground floor. Large windows flood the rooms with natural light. The kitchen is equipped for proper cooking, the living area has a smart TV, and everything you need for a stay is provided: Wi-Fi, electricity, bed linen and towels included. There is parking for two cars outside.

No smoking inside. The village lies near sandy beaches, and from here you can explore South Ronaldsay's archaeological sites, walk coastal paths, or take day trips to other islands. Kirkwall is 25 minutes away; Stromness takes 40.
