Mill Farm Holiday Cottages - River Cottage

Photo: Jeroen Roegiers

Knighton straddles the England-Wales border, a town of winding streets and half-timbered houses with strong links to medieval history. River Cottage is part of Mill Farm Holiday Cottages, a small collection of detached properties set within 180 acres of natural grounds on the village outskirts. The cottage itself is single-storey, all on ground level, with an enclosed garden and private hot tub overlooking rolling countryside.

Inside are two bedrooms—one with a double bed, one with two singles—and a shower room. The open-plan living space includes a kitchen with electric cooker and full refrigeration, a dining area, and a sitting room with television and DVD player. Essentials like electricity, heating, bed linen, towels and wi-fi are covered. There's private parking for two cars and access to shared games facilities including a pool table and table tennis in an external room; a washing machine is also available to guests. The cottage does not permit smoking.

Knighton is close to Offa's Dyke and the Glyndwr Way, making it a practical base for walking. The town has antique shops, tea rooms and pubs. Nearby are the Offas Dyke Heritage Centre, Powys Observatory with planetarium shows, and opportunities for golf, clay shooting and fishing. The Teme Valley is within reach for exploration.

Fabulous location for peace, quiet and uninterrupted stargazing. Only 10 minutes from Knighton village. If you have any disability, this cottage is not for you. The cottage itself is tired and in need of new mattresses, settee, fridge, and shower. It needs exterior work to make the stone steps safe and the handrails on the steps down from the parking area firm and safe. The cutlery drawer has broken tipped knives. There is no cloth to wash crockery with! The settee sinks on each seat, the mattresses are now topped, so have clearly needed changing for a while - the double mattress literally sinks in half as you get into the extremely low bedframe. Our son in law said that the single bed topper was soft, but very quickly became firm as it sank to meet the dead mattress and bed base. The shower is on a corner and so the sliding doors allow entry only sideways if you are a larger build. The mixer tap is just where your elbows reach as you wash and so you turn it off mid shower every time you raise your arm! The games room houses a particularly poor old pool table. The washing machine is at the top of a steep drive (as is the games room) and there is nowhere to dry towels used for showers or hot tub, or bathing costumes, yet a huge utility room. There is WiFi, but no phone signal - in case of emergency you are unable to call for help. Doors and windows are in need ofvrepairs, main door lock is a nightmare to lock and un,9ck. This is the only place I have not stripped beds before leaving, I dont feel that the facilities warrant the price.

Had a few days away here and it's been wonderful. Peaceful and quiet location, clean property, super clean and wonderful hot tub. Owners left a lovely box of chocolates on our arrival which we've enjoyed throughout our time. Got a little games room with a pool table and table tennis as well. Lovely to see birds of prey, rabbits, be serenaded by bird song to wake up and have a wonderful view. Would like to come back.

We stayed at Red kite Cottage at the weekend with our Cairn Terrier Alfie . What a stunning peaceful and relaxing location. The welcome pack on arrival was much appreciated by us all . Spacious well equipped accommodation. Because of the hot weather we made use of the hot tub early in the day then chilled out in the lovely garden taking in the views . Would recommend The Castle Inn at Knucklas for food and the Lion at Leintwardine for the riverside setting. We would thoroughly recommend staying here for a peaceful weekend in a stunning rural setting .

Large 2 bedrooms cottage. Good facilities and welcome pack. Big windows, beautiful views on the hills and the sheeps! Large covered and private hot tub with incredible view of the surrounding hills. Great cottage in a beautiful seating, quiet and relaxing! 4* only as the mattresses in the twin room are quite uncomfortable for an adult, may be ok for a child.
