About Green Gables Hotel
Green Gables Hotel suits travellers after a straightforward, affordable base near Scarborough's castle and seafront rather than a polished city stay. It works well for couples or families happy to trade a bit of shine for fair rates and a convenient spot, and pet owners will appreciate that animals are welcome throughout.
Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, crisp white bedding and towels, and plenty of hot water, though some rooms can feel tired and occasionally carry a musty smell, so it is worth setting expectations accordingly. Staff are consistently described as polite and helpful, and the hotel offers a restaurant, bar, breakfast, free WiFi, family rooms, an indoor swimming pool, and drinks brought to the room, with a lift and 24 hour reception adding practical ease. Outdoor seating gives a spot to relax, and free on-site parking is a genuine plus in a town where that is not always easy to find.
Beyond the hotel, Scarborough's castle and seafront are close by, and the surrounding area offers golf, fishing, watersports, cycling and walking routes, plus pubs, restaurants and entertainment nearby for evenings out. It is a fit for anyone wanting a no-frills, well-located base rather than a luxury retreat.
What guests say
If you're looking for somewhere that is falling to pieces then this is the place to stay. Although, the bedding was clean and fresh the cleanliness elsewhere was horrific. Dust over every shelf in the room, half eaten sandwich thrown on the floor in the corridor. We arrived to be told our rooms we had booked had now changed. There was no running hot water in the room we were given. The smell throughout the building wasn't pleasant and after a long day out we had the pleasure of having the 'green smell' entering our room even with windows closed. Would definitely not recommend.

Had three nights booked here, but left after the first night. As soon as we arrived we had to press the Ring doorbell to get a really miserable receptionist come to check us in. No enjoyment at all in his job, and spent most the time outside smoking, or on his phone. Inside the place feels really eerie, and outdated. The room was not much better with no working TV, stained walls, hardly any of the lights worked. The bath room was clean ish, beds were comfy enough at least. It was a really warm and stuffy night with hardly any ventilation in the room. Went to make a drink, and they left us just one sachet of milk, and unbelievably was already open too. It is such ashame to see the state of this hotel, stayed here around 12 years ago and it was so much better, when it comes to going downhill, this place has literally gone down hill, and could even just fall down, didnt feel safe here, and the building itself is in desperate need of attention. I dread to see what the pool is like now too. This resulted in us just walking out after first night. Do not stay here.

★☆☆☆☆ – Worst Hotel Experience We Have Ever Had We stayed at Green Gables Hotel, Scarborough, on 29 May 2026 with our family, including young children, and it was one of the worst hotel experiences we have ever had. The problems started before we even checked in. When making the booking, I had informed the hotel that we would arrive around 2:00 PM. We arrived slightly earlier, around 1:30 PM, and found nobody at reception. There was a call button, so I used it. The person who answered was extremely rude. Instead of a polite greeting or explanation, I was simply told, “Mubarak, you cannot check in at 1:30. Check-in time is 3 PM,” and the call was immediately ended. No welcome, no courtesy, no professionalism whatsoever. Being addressed by my first name in such a dismissive manner felt disrespectful. Since we could not check in, we spent several more hours outside with our family and returned at around 6:00 PM. At that point, we were informed that the hot water in our assigned room (Room 2) was not working. The solution offered was unbelievable: we were told to use another room (Room 27) elsewhere in the building whenever we wanted a shower. Imagine arriving after a long day at the beach with tired children covered in sand and being told to walk to a completely different room, on another floor and in another part of the building, just to take a shower. This is not what any family expects when paying for hotel accommodation. What made this even worse was that staff admitted the problem had existed for around 2–3 days. If they already knew about the issue, why were guests not informed before arrival? Why continue assigning the room? My wife and children had to carry their belongings to another room to shower and then return. During this inconvenience, my wife unfortunately lost a necklace. Whether it was lost inside the hotel or on the route between rooms, we cannot say, but this situation would never have arisen if the hotel had provided a functioning room in the first place. The room itself was also very disappointing: * The room had an unpleasant smell, as if people had been smoking there for a long time. * We expected a double bed, but instead there were three very small single beds. * The beds were extremely narrow and uncomfortable. * The room heating was not working properly. * The toilet facilities were in poor condition. * The flush was unreliable. * Water was leaking around the bathroom area. * The bathroom lock was not working properly. * Only two hangers were provided, and one of them was broken. * General maintenance throughout the room appeared neglected. The bathroom condition was particularly poor. Looking at the state of the facilities, it was clear that maintenance had not been a priority. The final disappointment came at checkout. We checked out on time at 10:00 AM and asked if the hotel could store our luggage for a few hours. We were told this was not possible. However, prior email communication from the hotel had clearly stated that luggage storage assistance would be available after checkout. By this point, we had completely lost confidence in anything we had been told. I have stayed in many hotels across different cities and countries, but I have never experienced such poor hospitality, lack of communication, lack of maintenance, and disregard for guest comfort. Families with children should think carefully before booking here. Unfortunately, Green Gables Hotel turned what should have been an enjoyable family trip to Scarborough into a frustrating and disappointing experience. Would not stay here again and would not recommend it to others. ★☆☆☆☆

If you’re looking for a stay that combines the thrill of uncertainty with the charm of neglect, Green Gables might just be for you. From the moment we arrived, things got off to a questionable start — mainly because finding parking felt like competing in the Olympics, but with fewer spaces than participants. The room itself had a… distinct personality. Sadly, that personality was “mouldy damp meets questionable herbal aroma.” Cleanliness clearly wasn’t on the itinerary, and the overall condition made us wonder if housekeeping had also checked out early. The real highlight, though, was the door — which didn’t lock. Nothing quite says “relax and unwind” like wondering who else might wander in. Safe to say, it didn’t exactly inspire a restful night’s sleep. To top it all off, the reception team brought a refreshing level of indifference to customer service. Concerns were met with all the urgency of someone ignoring a snooze alarm. All in all, we left feeling more relieved than relaxed. Unless you’re a fan of poor hygiene, limited parking, and a light brush with chaos, I’d strongly suggest giving this place a miss.
