The Hirsel - Lakeview is a ground-floor cottage on the Hirsel Estate near Coldstream, a working property centred around a historic house and home farm. The building sits within reach of Dundock Wood, known for its rhododendrons and azaleas, and Hirsel Lake, where you might spot otters and wildfowl. Waymarked paths cross the estate's parkland and woods, and the wider countryside around the Scottish Borders is accessible for longer walks and drives.
Inside are two bedrooms—one with a double bed, the other with two single beds that zip together—a shower room, and a combined living and dining space with a wood-burning stove. The kitchen, up three steps from the main level, is equipped for self-catering with an electric cooker, dishwasher, microwave and washing machine. Heating is by underfloor electric system, and the cottage includes electricity, bed linen, towels, Wi-Fi and logs for the stove. Private parking for two cars is provided on site. The property does not permit smoking.
A shared sitting area with picnic benches looks out over the grounds. Within the Homestead courtyard nearby—a short walk away—are craft workshops, a countryside museum and a café serving lunch and baked goods. The co-op in Coldstream is roughly a mile off, and a pub sits within the same distance. The Northumbrian coast is 30 minutes' drive south; Edinburgh is about an hour away. Note that there is an unfenced lake within the grounds, 550 yards from the cottage.

Hirsel Estate was a lovely place to visit. The £2.50 car park was an absolute bargain for such a beautiful location. There are plenty of woodland walks around the lake and estate, perfect for dogs (on lead), along with stunning rhododendrons and azaleas in bloom and even Highland cows to see. We also had lunch at the Homestead Café, which was excellent — friendly staff and delicious food.

Beautiful estate with gorgeous walks through park land and woods. Very well-maintained. Café and farm shop on site and a pottery. Ancestral home of Sir Alec Douglas Home. There is a monument celebrating his life at the entrance to the estate.

We visited coldstream and found this estate to walk round with the kids, it was a fantastic day with a number of different areas you can walk round, these included some woodland walks and some open field walks. Took some pictures of the highland cows and there were other animals in the fields.

A beautiful place to visit, lovely cafe with very quick service and we really enjoyed our lunch which was very reasonably priced. The small museums covering many different aspects of estate life were very interesting. Lovely play park for the kids. We opted for a coffee and cake at the picnic benches out the front of the farm shop where we were watching the swans. All for a small car park fee of £2.50. Won’t be our last visit I’m sure.
