About Inverlochy Castle Hotel
Inverlochy Castle stands at Torlundy, about three miles north of Fort William, with Ben Nevis rising directly behind it. The house was built in 1863 for Lord Abinger and Queen Victoria stayed for a week in 1873, writing approvingly of the setting. It has been run as a hotel since 1969. The grounds cover around 500 acres of parkland and woodland with a private loch in front of the castle, and the drive up to the entrance is one of the better arrivals in Scotland.
There are 17 bedrooms and suites in the main castle, all different, most of them large and traditionally furnished with antiques, heavy fabrics and marble bathrooms. Several look out over the loch or towards the Nevis range. Beds are generous and bathrooms have proper tubs as well as showers. A separate Gate Lodge in the grounds works well for families or a group wanting more privacy. There is no attempt at minimalism anywhere.
Dining is central to a stay. The restaurant occupies three interconnected rooms furnished with pieces presented by the King of Norway, which sets the tone. Cooking is classical with Scottish produce at its heart: west coast shellfish, Highland beef and venison, and local game in season. Breakfast is generous and unhurried. The Great Hall, with its frescoed ceiling and sweeping staircase, is where guests take drinks and afternoon tea, and there is a billiard room and a well-stocked bar.
The hotel suits an occasion rather than a hard walking holiday, though the location makes both possible. Guests can fish the loch, shoot, ride or take on Ben Nevis and the Glen Nevis paths from the door. Glencoe, the Road to the Isles and the Jacobite steam train at Fort William are all within easy reach. It is formal by Highland standards and best suited to couples, anniversaries and anyone who values old-fashioned service over contemporary design.

We booked very last minute, and the staff were incredibly welcoming and accommodating, especially considering I booked and then arrived just five minutes later. We were treated to freshly made scones at 9pm, which were perfect in my opinion. We stayed in a garden room, which was very pretty, and I absolutely loved the roll-top bath. All of the staff were friendly and approachable, and we would certainly stay again. Thank you for accommodating us at such short notice.

The hotel was nice, we stayed in the garden view rooms and had an amazing view of Ben Nevis. The room was comfortable. We did the dinner, and it was absolutely not worth the cost. While the service was great, the dinner experience missed the point entirely. The food was trying to be very modern while not being executed very well - we ultimately found that we preferred going to the local stores and eating charcuterie on the porches. We would have preferred a more historical/fictional approach to the food. Tell us the story of the castle and the area. There is so much history, but it doesn’t translate very well by the expert in the hotel. The dinner should be a tribute to the history of the castle. Tell us the tale. Don’t give us micro greens and fish that was pressed into a cookie cutter shape. It was ok, but not for the price they charge. Also, if I am staying in a castle I would like to experience a castle. Have a local musician come in and play music that isn’t piano/lounge. We would like to hear actual Scottish music.

Rooms need renovation. Not really a 5-star hotel Check-in was very slow. Not even helpful with luggage. Food is just ok. Not wonderful The shower is too small. It doesn’t even close properly. They do not clean the toilet every day. They just make the bed and do a superficial cleaning. Smells like feet And the Wi-Fi does not reach my room. I have to come to the lobby. There is an electrical room next to mine, so from 7 am-10 pm there is noise on and off. The safe box is not working correctly. It needs remodeling, cleaning, and training. Location is amazing but and thinks it is too pricey for what it actually is.

We had such a special stay at Inverlochy Castle. The property is beautiful and really well kept, and the whole place just has a great atmosphere. We didn’t eat at the castle restaurant and instead walked over to their nearby on-site pub, the Factors Inn, which ended up being such a good call. The food was honestly fantastic—I’m still thinking about those chips. Would genuinely love to know how they get them that crispy. The room is a little outdated, but in a way that actually adds to the charm and fits the feel of the castle. We would definitely come back!
