What visitors say
Located on the outskirts of Harlow, The Gibberd Garden is a Grade II listed landscape that serves as the deeply personal masterpiece of Sir Frederick Gibberd, the visionary architect who designed Harlow New Town. Created over the course of three decades starting in 1957, this isn't a traditional flower garden; it is a "garden of rooms," where architecture, sculpture, and nature are intricately woven together into a living gallery. The garden is famously diverse, featuring a series of glades, groves, and terraces that reveal themselves as you explore. Sir Frederick populated the landscape with over 80 sculptures, ranging from grand abstract pieces and classical busts to architectural salvage and whimsical columns. The terrain slopes gently down to the River Stort, where the atmosphere shifts from formal gravel terraces to wild, romantic marshlands and secret pools. Every turn is designed to offer a "view," framing a piece of art or a particularly striking tree. It is a sophisticated, intellectual, and deeply atmospheric sanctuary that reflects a lifetime of design and passion. Tips for your visit: • Sculpture Spotting: Look for the "Moat" and the "Lime Avenue"—these are some of the most iconic parts of the garden where the interplay between geometry and greenery is most evident. • The Tea Room: Don't miss a visit to the charming on-site tea room, which often serves homemade cakes and offers a lovely view of the surrounding lawns. • Seasonal Opening: The garden usually has specific opening times (often Sunday afternoons and Wednesdays during the spring and summer), so always check their official website before making the journey. • The House: While the garden is the main draw, Sir Frederick's house is a fascinating example of 20th-century design. Check if there are any specific tours or open days for a peek inside. The Gibberd Garden is an inspiring and poetic retreat that proves a garden can be just as much a work of art as any painting or building. 🌳🎨🏛️

Went for the beer festival. I walked along the quiet tracks from the station as excellently described on their website. The gardens were more of a greenery and shrubbery rather than summer flowers. Plenty of families with their own seating and food on the lawns.

A national treasure is this place that features the works of English sculptors. So far the garden boasts 90 pieces. The architect founder is a fascinating figure so do look him up. The place was made possible through the good efforts of local people. Do visit during snowdrop season in February (see the website). I believe the garden also hosts a beer festival at some point in the year, so look out for that too. I’m looking forward to visiting the garden again in full bloom in the summer.

Absolutely lovely part of the world on my doorstep... we shall be returning and taking out membership. We can only imagine at this stage what it must be like throughout the year... it was so lovely today.. a day of mixed weather. Mr & Mrs Gibberd have left a legacy for sure. 🙌
