A Victorian Christmas: Dickensian Festivals and Living Museums

Rochester's Dickensian festival, Beamish's Edwardian Christmas and Castle Howard's Dickens theme for 2026: where to find an old-fashioned Christmas in the UK, and what each actually involves.
Much of what we think of as a traditional British Christmas was shaped in the Victorian era — the cards, the tree, the turkey, and above all Dickens's A Christmas Carol. A handful of places now recreate that period every December, from a town-wide costume festival to a living museum lit by gas lamps. They suit families especially well.
At a glance
Rochester: Dickensian festival, 5 and 6 December 2026. Beamish: Christmas daytimes 21 November to 24 December, plus six ticketed evenings. Castle Howard: Dickens theme, 12 November to 3 January. Best for: families.
Rochester's Dickensian Christmas Festival
Dickens spent part of his childhood in nearby Chatham and later lived at Gad's Hill, just outside Rochester, and the town has held a Dickensian festival every December since 1988. Hundreds of people turn out in Victorian costume for parades through the old high street, with street performers, a Christmas market in the castle gardens and a funfair.
In 2026 the festival runs on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December. It is outdoors and weather-dependent: the 2024 festival was cancelled at short notice because of Storm Darragh. Watch the forecast and the organisers' updates in the days before.
Beamish, County Durham
Beamish, the open-air museum of life in the North East, dresses its streets, cottages and shops for Christmas in the styles of different eras. Its Christmas daytimes run from 21 November to 24 December 2026, with festive baking in the pit village and period decorations in the town.
The Christmas evenings
On selected evenings in December — in 2026, the 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th — the museum opens after dark, with the Edwardian town street lit and decorated. These are separately ticketed and sell out, so book well ahead.
Castle Howard, North Yorkshire
Each year the house near Malton is dressed around a Christmas theme, and for 2026 it is A Dickens of a Christmas, built around scenes from his novels. It runs from 12 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Timed tickets are required, and weekends go quickly.
Making a trip of it
Combine with a city
Castle Howard is about half an hour from York, so it pairs well with the York Christmas market. Beamish is close to Durham and Newcastle, and Rochester is under an hour from London by train.
Dress for standing about
All three involve hours outdoors in December. Waterproofs and warm boots matter more than anything else you pack.
Rochester beyond the festival
If the festival weekend does not suit, Rochester is worth a December visit anyway. Its Christmas market in the castle gardens runs on several weekends before Christmas, the Norman castle keep is one of the best-preserved in England, and the cathedral is the second-oldest in the country.
