About The Golden Fleece Hotel
The Golden Fleece has stood on Thirsk's Market Place since the Georgian era, when it served as a coaching inn for travellers crossing the Vale of Mowbray, and it remains the town's best-known address for a night's stay. Part of the Coaching Inn Group and recognised as a Which? Recommended Provider, it pairs its historic bones with a thoroughly updated interior.
Bedrooms range from Classic doubles to Superior and Deluxe rooms, each finished with the kind of polished woodwork and elegant lounges the building is known for, while the ground floor houses a long-standing bar and a restaurant serving modern British cooking built around Yorkshire ingredients.
Its position could not be more central: every Thirsk landmark, from St Mary's Church to the World of James Herriot museum, is within a short walk, and the hotel makes an easy base for exploring both the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors beyond the town.

What guests say
My partner and I fancied a mid week evening meal and decided on the Golden Fleece, Thirsk. I am so pleased we did. I had the Sea bass and my partner had the home cooked chicken and mushroom pie. Both meals were delicious and far exceeded our expectations. The staff were friendly and welcoming as well as providing excellent service. The restaurant was charming, peaceful and relaxing. We will definitely be returning.

As 2 retired colleagues living neatly 200 miles apart we meet every 6-8 weeks for lunch at The Golden Fleece Thirsk as it is the middle distance between us both. The food is delicious with menus changed regularly offering a varied choice of meals , light bites and sandwiches at very reasonable prices. The service is excellent in the bar, side rooms and restaurant. The waiting staff are very good and we usually meet the same waitress every visit - she is lovely and always cheerful . On our recent visit this week I mislaid my glasses and phoned to check if I had left them on the table. Jim on reception said they had been found and offered to post them back to me as I needed them for my upcoming holiday. This was so kind as I would’ve been without them until our next visit. Today three days later they arrived securely boxed and packaged to my home address. I truly appreciate the kindness from Jim who went above and beyond for me. Thank you Jim I really appreciate your kindness. The Golden Fleece really is a gem of a place with excellent food, good value with lovely staff.

My daughter and I met for a meal here. We ate in the lounge area as there was also a Private Function booking. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals. In particular, my steak was cooked perfectly (very rare) and the meat was both full of flavour and tender. We will return!

Amazing location and beautiful building. Interior is welcoming with lots of period features. The staff were lovely and friendly. The thing that sadly let our experince down was the food. We were advised that today was the first of the new menu. However, overall the food we ordered was underwhelming. Out of our starters, the scotch egg was fab, but the hot smoked salmon lacked any horseradish whatsoever. The mains were cooked well and tasty, but ultimately it was a hotdog and caesar salad, and lacked imagination. This new menu does not align with the expectation set by such a stunning venue. The dishes we chose felt quite simple and similar to a more standard pub menu. With a menu that better reflects the character and location of the hotel, the dining experince could be so much better. Overall we had a lovely time and we would return for a drink, but not to eat.
