About The Anchor Inn
Sticky toffee pudding and a proper Sunday lunch are the sort of thing The Anchor Inn does well, and the kitchen's focus on locally sourced ingredients runs through the rest of the menu too. It's the kind of pub where an open fire and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere make staying for a second drink an easy decision, helped along by staff who are consistently friendly and attentive.
Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, free WiFi, and drinks available to order in, with breakfast included to start the day. The garden offers a spot to sit outside, and free on-site parking makes arriving straightforward. It's worth noting the pub atmosphere isn't especially geared towards children, though kids' meals are available for those travelling as a family.
Set on Church Road in Thornbury, Gloucestershire, the inn is close to Thornbury Castle, with a golf course, fishing, watersports, and further pubs and restaurants all within reach nearby. Overall it offers solid value for money, with the food and atmosphere doing most of the work in bringing people back.

What guests say
One of the most disappointing pub experiences I have had, and absolutely not somewhere I would recommend. The biggest problem is their ridiculous inability to accommodate a child and a dog together. For a pub, especially one presumably trying to attract normal families, this is a massive own goal. People travel with children. People travel with dogs. Often they travel with both. This really should not be a complicated concept in 2026. What made it worse was the complete lack of any practical solution from the staff. We arrived with a child and a dog, and instead of any sensible attempt to help, we were met with a dead end. No flexibility, no proper alternative, no effort to make it work. Just a policy that seems designed to make life difficult for exactly the sort of customers a decent pub should be trying to welcome. The dining room itself is no saving grace either. It has absolutely no atmosphere. None. It feels flat, soulless and completely forgettable. It is definitely a place to avoid if you are hoping for warmth, character, or anything resembling a proper pub experience. The whole place feels like it needs to wake up and move into the real world. A pub that cannot cope with the very normal combination of families and dogs is not charming, traditional or quirky. It is just out of touch. The most frustrating part is that there are much better options nearby. The White Hart is only about 10 minutes down the road and actually understands what a good pub should be: welcoming, atmospheric, with a fantastic menu and a far better overall experience. Given the choice, I would not waste my time here again. Go to The White Hart instead. This place has managed to turn something as simple as a family pub visit into an unnecessarily awkward and disappointing experience. Not good enough by a long way.

The ONLY reason I gave this 4 starsbwas that my room was obviously above the cellar or something as there was a constant noise all night, the bathroom light also never turned off, but I reported it and I am sure it had been sorted now. Apart from that I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this pub/hotel. Good food, great Ale, GREAT atmosphere and lovely local people. I had a wonderful time in the pub with the locals. I would highly recommend.

Very small portions and quite high prices, but the meals were genuinely tasty. The customer service was friendly and attentive. We left our car in the pub’s car park so we could walk around the nuclear power station, and the parking was free of charge.

A good find for staying away when working in the Bristol area. Room was comfortable with decent quality kettle/toaster etc. Nice to have a good selection for breakfast in the room which meant I could help myself as and when rather than being restricted to certain times. Bed was very comfortable. My only complaint about the room was that the bathroom was a little compact which made it challenging for a taller person. The first night I stayed, I ate in the pub and the food was good and reasonably priced. The open fire made for a nice cosy setting. Would definitely stay again.
