Frankaborough Farm Cottages - The Old Shippen

Photo: slammedresto

This converted barn has been given new life as a rural holiday cottage on a working Devon and Cornwall border farm. Built from the bones of agricultural buildings, it retains character throughout while offering genuine comfort for a getaway in the countryside. Two bedrooms upstairs—a double and twin singles, each with a Velux window—share a bathroom with shower. Downstairs, an open-plan kitchen and dining area flows into a lounge where a woodburner provides warmth on cooler evenings. There's also a separate ground-floor toilet.

The kitchen comes fully equipped for cooking from scratch. Electricity, heating, Wi-Fi, bed linen and towels are all included, as is the initial fuel for the woodburner. A washing machine and tumble dryer mean you can manage laundry during your stay. Outside, an enclosed patio with garden furniture and a barbecue overlooks the larger grounds; there's also a shared children's play area on the farm. Private parking for two cars is on-site. One well-behaved dog stays free of charge, though smoking is not permitted indoors.

The property suits families wanting space to roam across open countryside, or couples after quietness without isolation. Travel cots, highchairs and a stairgate are available if needed. Access involves a couple of steps at the entrance and three in the garden.

Hosts are so accommodating we had to book very last second as our tent broke when camping. Linda was an angel in the situation and sorted us out with the I hut. It’s been a beautiful stay with lovely views, good clean hut and a comfy bed. Will recommend to any around the Dartmoor area

Great week for the 11 of us across 4 of the Lodges. Bit off the beaten track but well worth it. Linda and the family are very welcoming and friendly. Great little fishing lake which the grandkids loved, same with the puppies. All the lodges were very nice, well maintained and had everything we needed, and our view from the retreat was lovely to wake up to, even in the rain. For the price of 4 lodges I doubt you can get better value.

Amazing location! All the best beaches, activities and sight seeing are within 1.5hrs drive. Amazing accommodation! The facilities are top notch, very clean, very spacious and very safe. Our kids loved seeing the puppies, calves, chickens and fishing. Amazing host!!! Linda Banbury is a gem! Very welcoming and everyone in the farm is friendly. Feels like family home. We absolutely loved our stay at the Frankaborough Cottage! My kids didn't want to leave! Definitely coming back! Thank very much! Christine, Nariko, Naomi, Senem, Idris & Zara 24 - 27 Aug. ❤️❤️

Lovely countryside views. We have been coming to this farm for the last 20 years and every time we visit , we are made so welcome. If you want to have a holiday and see “how real dairy farming is done” then book your holiday break here. The Banbury family are so friendly and welcoming, you won’t find a better place with lovely views and lovely people. See you all next year.
