About Rewilding Coombeshead
Nestled within a 400-acre rewilding project in West Devon, Coombeshead offers a rare chance to camp among landscapes genuinely coming back to life. From your pitch on the mown flat field you'll have views sweeping toward both the Atlantic coast and Dartmoor, while water buffalo, wild cattle and Exmoor ponies graze freely across the estate. Book onto one of the expert-led ecology tours—beaver watching at dusk or wild walks through restored habitats—and you might spot water voles, white storks, or even wild cats returning to terrain they once called home.
Facilities are thoughtfully low-key: a covered camp kitchen with gas stoves and sinks, a barn lounge with games and a wood-fired pizza oven, plus gas-heated showers and flushing loos. Staff are knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about the project, happy to share insights into the rewilding work. The site feels purposefully peaceful and remote, though note that dogs aren't permitted to protect the resident wildlife—a fair trade for such an extraordinary natural setting.

We stayed in one of the Shepherd Huts (The Beaver/Number 4) and had a wonderful weekend at Rewilding Coombeshead. The views from the hut were amazing and made a great start to each day. The tours were fun and informative and our guide Tay did a great job explaining the work being done and the affects the wildlife have on the landscape. We were lucky to see Beaver, water vole, black and white storks, cranes, lynx, wildcats, exmoor ponies, water buffalo and an Iron Age pig. Even without the animals though this place would be very special. There was a moment down in the wild beaver area where the seeds of a willow tree were falling down on an area changed completely by the beavers and the land just looked magical in the most wonderfully natural way. Facilities are basic but comfortable and the experience makes this place worth it. Would recommend to any nature lovers and would suggest taking all of the tours offered. And special thanks to Dan who was visiting the site and assisted on the tours with Tay.

Stayed 2 nights in one of the Shepherd's huts. Did the self guided trail, beaver watching and animal rewilding talk. The whole thing is a real experience and well worth the visit. Site facilities were excellent, the rewilding land is nature at its best, chaotic and teeming with plant and animal species. Nice to see somebody doing something about replacing our lost diversity and making a real difference.
