8 handpicked places to stay

Ullapool's accommodation is concentrated in a small, walkable area around the harbour, with a handful of larger hotels on Garve Road as you enter the town from the south. Because the town is compact, the choice tends to come down to character and view rather than distance: a harbour-facing room on Shore Street puts you above the working fishing boats and a few steps from dinner, while Garve Road properties look out across the wider sweep of Loch Broom towards the mountains beyond. Booking ahead matters more here than in most towns of this size, since Ullapool's bed stock is genuinely limited relative to its popularity on the North Coast 500 and as the departure point for the Stornoway ferry — rooms for July and August sailings can sell out months in advance.

The eight properties below cover a deliberately wide range, from long-established harbourside hotels with restaurants and bars attached, through characterful inns that double as the town's evening entertainment, to family-run guest houses on the quieter southern approach to town. Several are housed in buildings dating back to the town's founding as a planned fishing settlement in the 1780s, and most can arrange packed breakfasts or early starts for guests catching the morning ferry. Whichever type of stay you are after — a proper hotel dinner, a pub room above a good bar, or a quiet B&B with a loch view and a home-cooked breakfast — Ullapool's small scale means you are rarely more than a five-minute walk from the harbour, the shops or the ferry terminal itself.
