You arrive at electric gates and drive into private parking for ten cars, approaching a moated manor house that was completely renovated in 2025. Porters Hall opens onto three floors of accommodation plus a separate annexe, designed to host large groups without anyone feeling cramped. Eleven bedrooms are distributed across the building—some with kingsize beds, some with zip-and-link beds that convert to singles, one a super kingsize in a galleried space—with nine bathrooms to match. Essentials like bed linen, towels, electricity, heating and wifi are provided, and the heating has separate controls in each room so guests can adjust to their preference.

The ground floor holds two living spaces with wood burners (one has a smart TV, the other doesn't), a dining room, and a kitchen fitted with an electric Aga, two dishwashers, wine cooler and coffee machine—everything you need to cook at scale. There's a utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer for longer stays. The annexe has its own games room with a pool table, air hockey and table tennis, plus a small bar setup. Three bedrooms in the annexe have grab rails, shower seats and emergency assistance alarms fitted; accessible features are otherwise scattered through the main house too. Outside, the grounds include a terrace with garden furniture, a gas barbecue, and an outdoor doggy shower for pets, who stay free of charge. No smoking throughout.

We stayed at Porters Hall for my parent’s 60th wedding anniversary - it was the most perfect place for a family reunion. Every detail is perfect - there are wonderful interiors with charming surprises in each room . The location and grounds are amazing - really beautiful and well maintained . The owners were accomodating and helpful- every little touch from the seasonal decorations to the home made cake that awaited us on arrival was really well thought out and made us feel so welcomed and taken care of . It is such a special place - we will certainly be back whenever we can .

Wow- what a property. Packed with history, surrounded by beautiful countryside and decked out with every mod con you could possibly want. We had a wonderful multi-generational family stay here and having a few accessible bedrooms in a separate annex worked brilliantly- letting grandparents escape the early morning chaos. The grounds hide lots of beautiful spots to wine, dine and play. The kitchen is such a joy to cook and catch up in and the fact there is not a bad bedroom in the house makes it great for big group trips. The perfect base for exploring some of the most beautiful villages and towns in Essex, with Finchingfield, Thaxted and Great Bardfield nearby!

Our family of 22 spent the Easter weekend at Porters Hall in Stebbing, Essex, and what a place it is! It is a luxury countryside retreat in rural North Essex. With ages ranging from late 80s down to a lively 2-year-old, it’s not always easy to find somewhere that suits everyone—but this absolutely delivered. Of all the large holiday lets we’ve stayed in over the years, this one ranks highest in terms of quality. The fact that it’s only 50 minutes from our homes makes it even more special. The care and attention given to restoring these ancient buildings is second to none. Every detail has clearly been carefully considered, and the workmanship couldn’t be faulted. It adds a real sense of character while still offering comfort and quality throughout. We made the most of everything on offer—relaxing in the beautiful hall, enjoying the surrounding gardens, and even visiting an excellent pub just a five-minute drive away. A highlight of the weekend was the traditional Easter Egg Hunt for the nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, which brought plenty of excitement (and chocolate!). It was a weekend full of laughter, relaxation, and great family moments. Safe to say, good fun was had by all. Absolutely stunning place to stay and make memories, the hosts are very approachable and quickly respond to any questions. Well done to those that own and manage Porters Hall - for creating such a lovely place. Fantastic from start to finish. We’ll be back. Highly recommended.
