Hide at St Donats - Bugail Hut
Vale of Glamorgan
View on Google MapsPhoto: Hide at St Donats
The Glamorgan Heritage Coast stretches along dramatic cliffs with quiet coves and sweeping views across the Bristol Channel—one of Wales's lesser-known stretches, rich in wildlife and history. Llantwit Major sits at its heart, with the medieval St Donats Castle just beyond the property boundary. From here, the coast is walkable in either direction, and Cardiff lies 25 minutes away by car if you want the city without staying in it.
Bugail Hut is a shepherd's hut among wildflowers and ancient trees within Tresilian Wood, a seven-and-a-half-acre arboretum on the estate. The single open room combines bedroom, living space and kitchenette; a wood burner warms it through the seasons, and a separate shower room is tucked alongside. The kitchen is compact but has everything needed for proper cooking. Wi-Fi, heating, bed linen and towels are all included, and the wood burner comes with initial fuel. Outside, your private terrace overlooks the woodland, with garden furniture and a firepit for evening sitting. Access is by footpath only, which means no car park is visible from the hut itself—quietness is genuine here. Two cars can park at the entrance.
This suits anyone wanting to walk the coast, read for days without distraction, or use the Vale as a base for exploring South Wales. No smoking indoors.

Relaxing few days in a great location. Our Caban was exactly right for what we wanted. Very peaceful with a lovely view over the meadow and out to the sea. A three night stay with two full days of coastal walking. - perfect !

What a stunning couple of days I've had! Dunraven Bay and Cowbridge Physic Garden on day 1 and on day 2 Forage restaurant for lunch followed by a walk to Monknash Bay - just stunning! The hut is brilliant - you have thought of everything - it's the perfect place in the perfect spot... So quiet, lovely to hear just birds... I've done yoga each morning, I've ignored emails and I've read 2 books... Feeling refreshed... Thank you so much!

We recently had the pleasure of staying at Hide and it exceeded all of our expectations. The site itself is beautifully maintained, peaceful, and designed to maximise comfort and relaxation at every level (the heated mattresses were to die for). What truly sets Hide apart is the exceptional hospitality of Paula & Tom - nothing was too much trouble for them, and no detail was spared in designing a truly luxurious experience. We’re already planning our return visit!

The Hide Walden lodge is an absolutely beautiful lodge in a wonderful location. Our hosts Tom and Paula were exceptionally welcoming and helpful providing us advice on coastal walks and went above and beyond even dropping us off to the nearby town for a wedding. Thank you so much for making our stay so special and memorable!
