For those who would rather stay closer to the parish itself, a scattering of farmhouse B&Bs and rural guesthouses can be found across the Blackdown Hills, many run from working farms with views back over the Vale of Taunton Deane. These tend to be small and personally run, so booking ahead is worthwhile, particularly during the summer months when the AONB draws walkers and cyclists. Whichever option is chosen, West Buckland's position right by the M5 and close to the A38 means everything from the village to the coast at Exmouth or the Exmoor and Quantock Hills further north is within comfortable reach for a day trip, making it a practical, low-key base for a longer Somerset stay rather than a headline destination in its own right.

West Buckland works best as a base for exploring the Blackdown Hills and the towns either side, rather than a destination with attractions of its own.

• St Mary's Church — a Grade I listed parish church with 13th-century origins, built between around 1275 and 1300 on the site of an earlier Norman building. Its crenellated tower, added around 1509, holds six bells, the oldest cast in 1606, and the font inside is Purbeck marble dating from 1140.
• Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty — the southern part of the parish rises onto the northern ridge of the AONB, with quiet lanes and footpaths giving views back over the Vale of Taunton Deane.
• Gerbestone Manor — a Grade II* listed manor house on the edge of the parish, substantially rebuilt in the late 16th century around some surviving 13th-century fabric, now used as a wedding and events venue.
• Wellington — the parish's post town, two miles to the west, with a historic high street, independent shops and the landmark Wellington Monument on the Blackdown Hills above the town.
• Taunton — the Somerset county town five miles to the north east, with a full range of shopping, the Somerset County Museum in Taunton Castle, and Vivary Park.

The village's own pub and shop have closed over the years, though a village shop still serves the community. The Blackdown Garden Centre sits just outside the village, and the wider choice of pubs, cafes and restaurants is found two miles away in Wellington or five miles away in Taunton.

West Buckland sits on the northern edge of the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and while the parish itself has no campsite of its own, the wider AONB and the country around Wellington and Taunton offer a fair choice of small, quiet sites suited to a rural Somerset break. As with the rest of England, wild camping without the landowner's explicit permission remains illegal here, so pitching up on the open hillside or in a farmer's field without asking first is not an option, however tempting the views back over the Vale of Taunton Deane might look.

The terrain rising south from the village onto the Blackdown ridge is a mix of steep lanes, hedged fields and working farmland, so sites tend to be small, family-run affairs on farms rather than large commercial holiday parks, several of them within a few miles of West Buckland around Wellington. These typically offer grass pitches for tents and touring vans, with limited facilities compared to bigger parks, which suits those after a peaceful stay over a resort-style experience. Booking ahead is sensible in peak season, since pitch numbers are often modest.

Spring through early autumn is the best window for camping here: the Blackdown lanes and hedgerows are at their greenest from May onward, and long summer evenings make the most of the views over the Vale of Taunton Deane and towards the Wellington Monument. Ground can be wet underfoot for much of the winter given Somerset's clay soils, so cooler months suit only well-equipped campers. For those who would rather skip the tent altogether, a small but growing number of glamping options across the Blackdown Hills, including shepherd's huts and safari tents on farm sites, offer a more comfortable way to enjoy the same countryside without sacrificing the quiet, rural setting that draws people to this corner of Somerset.
