Small families and couples will find The Shippon well suited to a break away from it all. This converted barn cottage is one of four on Martin Lane Farm's grounds near Ormskirk, with six acres of countryside around it and a ten-minute drive to the coast. The building retains its character as a former outbuilding but has been fitted out as a proper home, split across two floors with everything you need for self-catering.

Downstairs is an open-plan living space with a 32" TV, DVD player and dining area, plus a kitchen with electric cooker, microwave, fridge and washing machine. Upstairs are two bedrooms: one with a zip-and-link super king bed (or two singles on request), the other with two single beds. There is one bathroom with both bath and shower cubicle. Electricity, heating, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi are included; parking for two cars is on site. A travel cot and highchair are available if needed.

The cottage opens onto a cobbled courtyard. Beyond that, guests share access to the farm's grounds, which have a garden with barbecue, gas barbecue, chiminea, pizza oven and fire pit, plus a bike store and shared laundry room with tumble dryer. The grounds include nine steps, a fenced pond 30 yards away and a stream 275 yards away. Smoking is not permitted inside.

What a beautiful, gem of a place. Farm buildings that have been converted into self contained apartments. Yes we could have stayed in a souless premier inn with noisy guests at 2am, but we wanted something with character, close to town. Ormskirk and Southport are nearby. Its a paradise for cyclists, hikers and there's even a canal close by for kayakers and Suppers. We will definitely back to stay here!

Stayed in the Dairy for three nights visiting family and old haunts. Perfect for a couple. Cosy and secluded, proper middle of nowhere stuff.

The Dairy was a wonderful place to stay! Perfectly sized and set out for solo or a couple. Private, you wouldn't know there are other units around, but this would be a great place for a stay that needed a number of separate spaces. Convenient for WWT Martin Mere (less than an hour walk if you're so inclined). Although not needed, parking space was fine and safe. Truly everything you'd need for a short (or longer) stay.

Albeit out of the way, we found this a great stay. The hostess was super friendly & helpful & the cottage was clean & well presented for a great price for the 2 nights we stayed.
