Western Isles

The Western Isles form an archipelago off the north-west coast of Scotland, stretching from Lewis in the north to Barra in the south. The islands are characterised by moorland, rocky coastlines, and exposed, windswept terrain. They have a strong Gaelic heritage and remain sparsely populated, with small settlements connected by single-track roads and ferries.

About camping in Western Isles

The Western Isles chain, from Lewis and Harris down through the Uists to Barra, is well suited to camping and campervan travel, with pitches often set beside machair, beach or croftland rather than in formal parks. Laxdale Holiday Park near Stornoway makes a practical base for exploring Lewis, while Moorcroft Holidays and Kilbride Campsite offer simpler stops further along the road south.

Further down the chain, Balranald Hebridean Holidays sits close to the wildlife reserve on North Uist, and Flodabay Farm and South Uist Hostel and Campsite give options for breaking a longer journey. On Barra, Barra Holidays @croft183 and Croft No2 Campsite are among the island's crofting stays, and Hebrides Campervan Overnight Parking suits those touring by van without needing full facilities each night.
