Cartmel Priory and its racecourse sit just over a mile away, while Lake Windermere is nine miles north. Holker Hall and Sizergh Castle are both within reach for a day out, and the Lake District's main routes are close enough that this makes a practical base for exploring the fells without being in the thick of tourist crowds. The Pheasant Inn stands across the road, so an evening meal needs no driving.
Dunmail House has three bedrooms sleeping six: two zip-and-link beds that can be configured as singles or a super king, plus kingsize and double options. Two bathrooms service the property. Downstairs, the living room centres on a woodburner, while the dining room has an open fire and original wooden floors kept from the older cottage that stood here. The kitchen is fitted for cooking, and there's a wet room on the ground floor. Essentials like linen, towels and Wi-Fi are included, along with initial fuel for both fires and parking for three cars on site.
A sloped garden with a terrace faces the bay. One dog is welcome to stay at no extra charge. Smoking is not permitted inside.

Dunmail House is in a lovely location with a big, safe garden for our Yorkshire terrier to run around in. We were worried as she's so small she'd escape through the hedge but we discovered there's netting in the gaps so that was a relief! We found it immaculately clean. Bedding is high quality and plenty of towels at our disposal. The bathrooms are modern and showers were amazing - plenty of hot water. The upstairs bathroom has a bath - great for tired bones!! Bedrooms are a good size and most importantly for us ladies there were dressing table mirrors in all the rooms and a hairdryer in one. Kitchen has everything you need. There's salt/pepper/mixed herbs in the cupboard but nothing else so bring your own teabags/sugar/coffee/oil/milk. We did have some instant coffee and a packet of biscuits in the welcome pack but they soon ran out!! There's The Pheasant over the road which we went to for breakfast. Lovely staff and food. Go very slow into the parking space. It's on a steep slope and is narrow. We have a Picasso and we had a few cms each side. Once you've mastered turning around it's a doddle! Some things need attention though. There's quite a musty smell on entering the house. The living room needs another lamp for ambient light as the large one by fireplace has no bulb/broken (?). The garden furniture is falling to bits and cushions aren't in a nice condition. Garden needs weeding and tending to badly. On the whole we enjoyed our break here though!

Lovely cottage in a great location. Full of personal touches, with everything you could need for a break away from home. Would 100% recommend for a trip to the Lakes. Can't wait to return!

Outside area looked great, with a BBQ, but not very usable in Feb! Things we loved: Log burner Stair gate and high chair were available Lovely modern kitchen Large dining table Cosy lounge Very clean Modern, large bathrooms Great views Pub opposite Owners very organised and communicative

We spent a most delightful week at Dunmail House in September, it suited us very well, a party of five: two old-aged pensioners a young couple and an infant, not forgetting a bouncy black Labrador! There was plenty of room for everyone and the whole house is beautifully decorated and well designed, with bathrooms both upstairs and down, for example. The kitchen is great, with plenty of crocks and crockery and enough pots and pans for us to rustle up our own meals, although having The Pheasant Inn just opposite meant we always had the option of eating out also. It was good having ample off-road parking for our two cars as on most days we left them at the house whilst we went off for walks in the wonderful South Cumbria countryside and coast. Even under the COVID restrictions operating at that time, there was plenty to do, we walked into Grange a couple of times where there are lots of shops and cafes and nice gardens and we took short trips to Cartmel and Lakeside but really did not get to see all we wanted to, there is plenty to see and do locally. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay, in one of the nicest holiday lets we have ever found, but we don't want to recommend it too highly in case it is fully booked next time we want to be there!
