Otter Tarn: Mungeon Barn
Westmorland and Furness

The Lake District and Morecambe Bay are within reach from Mungeon Barn, a detached conversion on a working holiday estate near Backbarrow. The grounds span 500 acres of woodland shared with other properties on-site, with a trout lake also present; there is an unfenced body of water 200 metres from the barn itself. This is a quiet, rural base for exploring the fells and coast rather than a village location.
The barn sleeps 8 across four bedrooms: a kingsize with ensuite shower on the ground floor, two further kingsize rooms, and a fourth with twin singles. Ground-floor bathrooms include a family bathroom with bath and shower, plus a separate shower room. Upstairs, the main living space is open-plan across the first floor—kitchen, dining and sitting areas flowing together, with a woodburner, a second TV lounge, and access to the patio where a private hot tub seats six. The kitchen is fully fitted for self-catering, with electric oven, induction hob, dishwasher and American fridge. Wifi, electricity, bed linen, towels and logs for the stove are included. Ground-source underfloor heating keeps the property warm. A utility room houses a washing machine and tumble dryer. Private parking accommodates four cars.
The barn does not permit smoking. It suits families and groups wanting space and privacy; travel cot and highchair are available on request. The setting is peaceful and secluded, though it shares the estate's common ground with other holiday lets.

There are very few Airbnbs you check out of feeling sad to leave, this is one of them. The house and surrounding area are so beautiful it’s hard to say goodbye. The property itself is pure luxury, tucked away in one of the most peaceful, picturesque parts of the Lake District. Kath was a brilliant host, proactive with communication and quick to reply to any questions. We loved every moment of our stay and will absolutely be back.

This is our second stay at Otter Tarn. We loved it so much we went back again. The location is lovely, so peaceful with just the sound of the birds and animals mainly. There are no main roads close by. The standard of the accommodation is truly excellent. Our Lodge was spotless when we arrived. The quality of the furnishings is top class. The hot tub was ready to climb into. We had a wonderful time. We really recommend Otter Tarn.

Had the most fantastic weekend in toad mire. Lodge has everything you could possible need and more as well as excellent views across the lake. So many local walks on the estate and beyond. Spent time in Cartmel with so many cafes, bars and restaurants with amazing food for snacks or quality meals. Lovely quaint shops including sticky toffee pudding shop. Thank you so much and we’ll be back!!

Our recent visit to Otter Tarn Luxury Lodges is one of many we’ve enjoyed over recent years, and it never disappoints. On this occasion we stayed in Horse Spout, having previously stayed in Toad Mire, and once again the accommodation was presented to the very highest standard. The lodge is beautifully equipped and has such a warm, homely feel. There is an incredible amount of space, particularly when there are only two of you 😀 making it the perfect place to relax and unwind. The added luxury of the very private hot tub is a real highlight. The location is simply second to none. Tucked away in wonderfully secluded countryside, near to the lovely village of Cartmel and overlooking the peaceful tarn, it provides the perfect setting for a quiet escape. All of this is supported by the most amazing service from Kath and her family, who make every stay feel personal and welcoming. This certainly won’t be our last visit to Otter Tarn Luxury Lodges and we would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing and special place to stay. A true 5 star experience
