Kirkby Stephen sits at the heart of walking country, with the Yorkshire Dales and fell routes radiating outward. Sandbed Cottage occupies the foot of Harter Fell itself, positioned for immediate access to the landscape without the formality of a grand estate. The village of Ravenstonedale lies close by, offering two pubs and everyday services; Sedbergh, the market town famous for books and independent shops, is six miles away.
The cottage is a two-bedroom, one-bathroom property sleeping four. Downstairs is an open-plan living and dining space with a wood burner and comfortable seating, alongside a kitchen equipped for proper cooking rather than holiday shortcuts. A king bed occupies the first bedroom; two singles are upstairs, with a shower room serving both floors. The owners have retained original features—oak beams, flagged stone, exposed walls—and furnished the space with restored pieces that blend old and new without strain. A private orchard garden with seating and a barbecue is enclosed, and parking for three cars sits on site.
Essentials are covered: heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi are included, along with initial logs for the burner. One dog stays free and the property provides extras for them; families with young children can request a travel cot and highchair. An external utility room houses a washing machine and tumble dryer. The enclosed garden and bike store cater to different ways of spending time, though most visitors come for the walking—the fell is essentially on the doorstep, and longer routes into the Howgills or down to Sedbergh begin from the gate. No smoking indoors.

We had a great week at Sandbed cottage in March. It's a cosy, comfortable cottage. Steve and Karen have given a lot of thought to providing an excellent experience for their guests. It's an excellent location for exploring the area and perfect for anyone interested in wildlife and hoping for some peace and quiet! Steve and Karen are friendly and helpful with lots of useful information about the area. Thanks very much for a lovely stay!

Fantastic, quiet and comfy in an excellent location. Finished to a very high standard. Would definitely recommend, prime position for walking or just settling in front of the log burner. We were lucky enough to be visited by a red squirrel on the bird feeder within the garden.
