The Barracks

Westmorland and Furness

The Barracks is a two-bedroom cottage in Little Strickland, dating from the 1600s with original features including slate floors and beamed ceilings. The wood burner in the living room is the real draw on colder days—initial logs are included, though you'll pay for any extra. Upstairs, one bedroom has an en-suite shower cubicle; the other is a double. The bathroom downstairs has a bath with shower over it. The kitchen is equipped for proper cooking, with an electric range, dishwasher and microwave. One dog is welcome. You have the run of an enclosed lawned garden with seating and furniture, plus access to about an acre of landscaped grounds shared with the owners. There's parking for two cars on site. Wifi, electricity, bed linen and towels are all included.

The cottage sits in a quiet village but puts you within reach of Ullswater and Haweswater for walking, the Eden Valley, and into the Scottish Borders. The nearest shop is 3 miles away; a pub and restaurant are 2 miles off. The grounds have five steps, which is worth knowing. No smoking inside.
