About George Borrow Hotel
Ponterwyd, a village in Ceredigion close to the Vale of Rheidol Railway, is where you'll find the George Borrow Hotel, a small hotel with 10 rooms set among the hills a little outside Aberystwyth. It makes a quiet base for exploring the surrounding countryside, with the railway itself a notable point of interest nearby.
Rooms are comfortable, with guests particularly noting the quality of the beds and the cleanliness throughout, along with pleasant views over the surrounding landscape. The hotel has its own restaurant and bar, serving breakfasts and evening meals that include home-cooked options such as vegan stew, and there's a garden for warmer days plus a spa and sauna for relaxing after a day out. The property also has meeting rooms and hosts weddings, alongside more practical facilities like laundry service, luggage storage and free WiFi.
Staff are consistently described as friendly and accommodating, and the large on-site car park is a genuine convenience given the rural setting, with free parking provided. Further afield, Aberystwyth itself offers additional restaurants, pubs and entertainment for those wanting a change of scene.

Great Location, Cozy Stay & Outstanding Customer Service My husband and I stayed here because of its convenient location near Devils Bridge. Since we were traveling during the off-season, we booked accommodations as we went, not knowing where we'd end up each day because most places still had availability. We chose the George Borrow Hotel, and I'm so glad we did. We arrived around 8:00 p.m. and were warmly welcomed by Karen, who I believe was the owner or manager. Even though the kitchen had already closed, she kindly offered to prepare us a dinner plate. That level of hospitality immediately made us feel at home. Stepping out of the car that evening—and again the next morning—was such a memorable experience. The air was crisp, the night sky was incredibly clear, and the cool morning breeze created such a peaceful atmosphere. Coming from Los Angeles, this was one of the most unique places I've ever stayed. The converted farmhouse is full of character and charm. While some other historic properties have been updated with more modern finishes, I would argue that the George Borrow Hotel offers a much more authentic experience. Combined with the exceptional customer service, it made our stay even more special. We only stayed for two nights, but whether you're sightseeing, golfing, hiking, or simply passing through for a night, I highly recommend staying here. A special mention goes to the English breakfast. My husband ordered one everywhere it was offered during our trip, and Karen's was his favorite by far. (As a side note, we never quite understood the grilled tomato! That's certainly not a criticism of the traditional English breakfast—we're genuinely curious about how it became part of the meal.) Thank you, Karen, for making our stay so welcoming and memorable. The only downside was completely my fault—I accidentally left behind my favorite pair of blue cargo sweatpants. I should have checked the room more carefully before we left! And finally… Wales was absolutely awesome! We can't wait to come back.

Wow what an amazing place made by the kind people running the hotel. Yes it's old fashioned but that's not what counts. Set in an amazing location in mid Wales. Beds comfy, a bit of road noise (room I had faced the road) at night but minor as it's such a quiet area. We were cycling across Wales and they could not have done more to accommodate us and our bikes especially as we arrived very late and soaked through. They kept dinner late for us as well and it was an excellent vegetarian African stew. I don’t often tip but such was the service I couldn’t not have. Wonderful people, thanks for the stay!

We stayed 1 night in a twin room with an en-suite shower and toilet. There was a kettle and plenty of tea and coffee sachets available . The hotel staff were so friendly and welcoming and we arrived in time for a tasty evening meal. The beds were comfy and spotless. The view from the room is so pretty. This hotel was great value and I would definately stay here again.

Stopped off here for an impromptu meal on the way back after a long day out. We didn’t have a reservation but we were made to feel welcome and the staff were very accommodating. The food was really tasty, decent sized portions and fresh ingredients. Would definitely recommend.
