SADE ENGLISH

I recently had an assessment lesson here and, unfortunately, found the experience quite disappointing. As someone returning to riding, I made it clear beforehand that I am able to rise and trot, and wished to improve on riding on correct diagonals, however I currently also am able to do the basics and exercises such as serpentines. I am currently progressing towards canter work and aim to move onto BHS-level courses once I can canter confidently and consistently. For context I have also been informed at other centres that I am riding at around Level 2 and I regularly ride independently during hacks, including managing direction and participating in group classes. While I am continuing to refine my skills, I am not a complete beginner and communicated this clearly ahead of the lesson. During the session, however, the instructor held onto the reins for the entire time. This felt extremely restrictive and meant I was not given a genuine opportunity to demonstrate my ability or ride naturally. I was surprised by the level of critique, particularly without being allowed the independence to show what I could do- in comparisons to other centres. The overall approach felt limiting and extremely discouraging. I couldn’t help but feel that my ability may have been underestimated, despite explaining my experience. I did mention that I have previously ridden in Africa /rode as a child and fully understand that standards and styles can differ, but I was clear that I was keen to adapt and improve. However, I was left questioning whether assumptions had been made about my level from the outset, as I was not given the chance to ride freely and demonstrate my capability. I also can’t help but wonder whether my background may have influenced expectations, though I sincerely hope that is not the case. The experience had a significant impact on my confidence. I left feeling quite disheartened and, for a time, reluctant to ride again due to the tone of the feedback and the lack of trust in my ability. This was particularly difficult as an adult rider, where confidence plays such an important role in progression. After reading other reviews, I appreciate that this experience may not be reflective of the centre as a whole, however see others felt restrictive too for children. However, as a 34-year-old woman, I felt it was important to share an adult rider’s perspective. Thankfully, since then, I have ridden at other centres where instructors have been far more encouraging and balanced in their approach. I was able to ride independently in both the arena and on hacks, and received positive, constructive feedback that has helped rebuild my confidence. I have since been reassured that I ride well and am progressing faster even for my level as I ride twice a week now. As a result of this experience, I have chosen not to return. That said, I would like to acknowledge that the wider team were friendly and welcoming, the yard had a positive atmosphere, and the staff appeared happy in their work. The cats were also very sweet. Based on my experience, I would personally recommend considering other local centres such as Lee Valley Riding Centre, Mount Mascal or Mottingham Riding Centre.

The one thing that really lets this place down is the Manager - older lady on a scooter. Rude, passive-aggressive and has the absolute worst customer service skills. Talks to people like rubbish and makes up rules to suit her as she goes along basically. This is supposed to be a Charity, she should not be the head of this place at all. Things have just gotten worse as the years have gone by. So many of the other riders and parents have discussed this and its really a shame because the yard is nice, the trainers are great and the office ladies are lovely. But even they seem to have had enough because we keep seeing them leaving which is disheartening as theyre the ones we'd rather have dealings with. Really sad because we love horses and its great to have something local but shes ruining the place.

We’ve had a wonderful experience at Docklands Equestrian Centre 🐎 My daughter absolutely loves her riding lessons with Rachel, who is an outstanding instructor. She is kind, patient, encouraging, and incredibly knowledgeable, always making lessons enjoyable while maintaining a strong focus on safety and skill development 🌟 My daughter can sometimes shut down if she feels like she’s getting things wrong, and she really thrives on positive encouragement. I explained this to Rachel, and she genuinely took it on board. My daughter has learned that Rachel’s guidance is always supportive and helpful, and she now feels so encouraged and confident during her lessons 😊 Rachel’s care, professionalism, and clear passion for both her students and the horses truly stand out 💕 We highly recommend her to anyone looking for a fantastic horse riding instructor.

Took the kids and 1 adult to the equestrian centre today. Easy system - line up at the office, pay, change into the available boots/wellies as required, then line up to get your helmet. Reasonably priced. Each rider did 4 laps for £5. You need to supervise your younger kids riding. Wear long bottoms - no shorts / skirts / dresses. Vending machine near office. Friendly staff. Plenty of car park space.
