About The Furness Railway Wetherspoon

Anyone after a no-nonsense base for exploring Cumbria without paying over the odds will find The Furness Railway Wetherspoon does the job well. This is a pub-hotel on Abbey Road in Barrow-in-Furness, combining an affordable stay with the familiar Wetherspoon set-up of restaurant, bar and straightforward service downstairs.

Rooms are en-suite and come in a fair size, with air conditioning, free WiFi and family and accessible options available, plus drinks available in room for those who want to settle in for the evening. Downstairs, the bar and restaurant serve a wide range of food and drink including real ales, with the breakfast and the sticky Korean fried chicken singled out as particular favourites. Staff are generally friendly and the value on offer is strong, though a few visitors have found service inconsistent at busier times.

The location suits those wanting to get out and about, with walking and cycling routes nearby, along with golf, fishing and watersports for more active days, and further pubs and restaurants within easy reach for evenings out. It's a practical choice for a straightforward, well-priced stay in the area.

You know what you’re going to get in a Spoons. Didn’t eat on this occasion but this is a BIG pub & it was busy just after noon on a sunny 😎 Saturday in July. £8.50 for a decent pint of Stella & a cocktail of my wife’s choosing is great value in my opinion. Judging by the other pubs in the centre of Barrow, I can see why The Furness Railway is so popular. Well used so looking a bit worn - especially the carpet! Nice outside seating area too.

17 May 2026. Thank you to the receptionist that day, she does her job perfectly. The location is perfect, it's quiet, even though the rooms are above a pub. The room is large and spacious, clean and refreshed, with a large bathroom. Parking is behind the hotel, so it's perfect for me.

Highly recommend based on the high spec of the rooms. Cheap prices in bar and location to get to Walney Islsnd and western lake district. Lovely walk on the beach which is 15 mins by bus which stops outside the pub
