About Barn Owl Campsite

Tucked into the Suffolk countryside near Rattlesden, this tiny, remote site offers proper wild camping for those craving peace and dark skies. With just a handful of non-electric grass pitches, composting loos and a washing-up area, Barn Owl keeps things refreshingly simple – campfires are encouraged, and the setting is a genuine wildlife haven where barn owls and other species thrive. Facilities are basic (though there are showers and charging points), so it won't suit everyone, but for walkers, cyclists and families happy to rough it a little, the trade-off is spectacular scenery and total tranquillity.

The location puts you within easy reach of Suffolk's medieval gems: Lavenham's half-timbered streets and Gothic church are 20 minutes by car, as are the abbey ruins and grand cathedral of Bury St Edmunds. Closer still, the village of Rattlesden – a 20-minute stroll – has a shop, post office and a couple of welcoming country pubs.

As a first time camper I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy it however this beautiful site has sparked my camping bug, we visited here twice in two weeks, the owners are lovely and very welcoming 😊 The pitches are very spaced out and secluded, the toilets are clean and plenty of them, you get a fire pit and picnic table on each pitch. The hammocks were an added bonus! Lovely warm showers, washing up area with clean drinking water provided. Will definitely be returning for a third time 😊

One of the best campsites we’ve ever been to! Friendly and helpful owners. Lovely quiet site with separated pitches, ours even had hammocks! Basic facilities but very clean and enjoyed the outdoor shower shack. Thank you for our stay.

Absolutely beautiful site. Basic but very well thought out. Plenty of toilets and each pitch has a fire pit and picnic table. We were delighted by the woodland pitches with hammocks. Pitches are thoughtfully spaced out, and are really generous. We stayed in a bell tent, which was clean and thoughtfully lit by solar lights at the entrance and battery powered bedside lights. Bed and sofa beds were very comfy. Excellent warm shower, and space in the shower cubicle to keep clothes dry. We can’t wait to return!
