About Darroch Learg
Darroch Learg has been run by the Franks family since 1961, which is more than sixty years of unbroken ownership and shows in the way the place is looked after. The house dates from 1888, built as a private residence on the wooded slope above Ballater, and became a hotel in the 1950s. It stands on Braemar Road with views south across the River Dee towards Glen Muick and the Lochnagar hills.
There are ten bedrooms, traditionally furnished rather than styled, and two comfortable sitting rooms where guests tend to end up before dinner. The scale is deliberately small: this is a hotel that trades on personal service and a settled, unhurried atmosphere rather than facilities. It has been a fixture of Scottish hotel guides for decades on exactly that basis.
The restaurant is central to the offer, working with seasonal Scottish produce across lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, with Deeside venison, beef and salmon all close at hand. Ballater itself is five minutes down the hill, a Victorian village with an unusually strong run of independent shops, and the walks up Craigendarroch and out along the Seven Bridges start nearby. Balmoral and Royal Lochnagar distillery are ten minutes west, Braemar half an hour further on.

My husband and I were staying in an apartment in Ballater and booked dinner here during our visit. It was exceptional. The hotel is charming, perched on a hill just outside the town centre, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere from the moment you arrive. There is a small bar at the entrance where guests are greeted by the owner and family, adding a very personal touch. The wine list is outstanding, offering an impressive and diverse selection, and the spirits collection is equally noteworthy. Being escorted to the dining room feels like part of the experience and sets the tone for the evening. I contacted the restaurant in advance because I am vegetarian and wanted to ensure they could accommodate my dietary needs. Not only could they, but they did so exceptionally well. Each of our three courses was beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious. The service throughout the evening was friendly, attentive, and professional. Over two weeks of travelling throughout Scotland, this was easily one of the three best meals I experienced.

A perfect example of a superbly run family owned and run luxury hotel. Every detail considered professionally and with tbe greatest of good taste, both in ambience and menu. A wonderful find amid a forest of mediocrity in the hospitality world. Enjoy the care and attention of the Franks' family for as long as you can in this beautiful hotel amid fabulous Scottish scenery.

Darroch Learg was easily our best hotel stay in Scotland. Gorgeous views, quiet elegance, superb food. The owners and staff went above and beyond, including generously spending time with us planning our local outings. Even brought the computer we forgot into town so we wouldn’t miss our connection (can’t thank you enough Gayle). Highly recommend.

A Perfect Stay – Highly Recommended! "A truly perfect experience! We arrived late after a long day of driving and were greeted with such warmth by the lovely Fiona, the owner. She personally showed us to our room, which was spacious, impeccably clean, and very welcoming. After settling in, we went down to the bar for a drink and met Fiona’s partner and co-owner, Nigel. He recommended a fantastic whisky, which we enjoyed by the fireplace while browsing the menu for dinner. Once we finished our drinks, we were escorted to the dining room—a beautiful, serene, and spotless space. The dinner was outstanding, clearly made with premium, high-quality ingredients. In the morning, we woke up to a breathtaking view framed by the large bedroom window. After an excellent breakfast, we said our goodbyes to Nigel and Fiona. It was a flawless stay—our only regret is that it was too short. We cannot recommend this place highly enough!"
