About Holiday Inn Express Canterbury
For travellers who want an easy, predictable stopover rather than a boutique experience, Holiday Inn Express Canterbury fits the bill. Just off the A2 at Upper Harbledown, it suits families on road trips, business visitors passing through Kent, and anyone who values straightforward parking over a city-centre address. Pets are welcome too, making it a practical choice for those travelling with dogs.
The hotel has 89 rooms across two floors, including family and accessible options, all with en-suite bathrooms and drinks available in-room. A restaurant and bar cover evening meals, with a snack bar and packed lunches for guests on the move, and kids' meals are catered for. Breakfast is a particular strength, with a good spread of hot and continental choices included. Air conditioning isn't guaranteed throughout, which is worth bearing in mind if you're visiting in warmer months.
Elsewhere, there's a garden and outdoor seating for a bit of fresh air, meeting rooms for anyone combining business with the trip, and an electric vehicle charge point on site, though parking itself is chargeable. Staff are consistently helpful, and the location makes Canterbury's cathedral city and surrounding Kent countryside easy to reach by car.
What guests say
This is a nice Holiday Inn where the staff are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is fresh and constantly being topped up. We had a large party staying for the night whilst we were there and they coped very well. Beds are a little high but comfortable. The step to get in to the shower was also a bit high for me. I found it hard to get in and out. I will have to mention that next time we stay. The food is good. As it a smaller Holiday Inn there isn't so much choice and they tend to run out of some of the meals but they try to make up for it.

We had an excellent stay (1 night on the way to London) at this Holiday Inn Express. First of all, the service was extremely polite, friendly, and professional. Both the reception staff and the breakfast restaurant team were wonderful and made us feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. We checked in late at night, and the check-in process was quick, smooth, and very kind. The warm welcome after a long journey was really appreciated. The rooms were very, very clean and everything looked fresh and well maintained. We stayed in a family room with two double beds, which offered plenty of space for everyone. The bathroom was well equipped with shampoo and shower gel, there were enough fresh towels, and also enough space to store luggage comfortably. Breakfast was very nice with a good variety of options, including a warm English breakfast as well as continental choices. You can grab a drink for free 24/7 (water, tea). Overall, it was an extremely good experience and we would definitely recommend this hotel.

Disappointing service that fell short of IHG standards Booked for our 10-year anniversary and emailed the hotel two days ahead to let them know. At check-in, staff confirmed they'd seen my note and told me — with a wink — that we'd been given a room upgrade. That turned out not to be true. The room was a standard double, no upgrade, and no acknowledgement of the anniversary despite advance notice — no note, nothing. When I called to query the "upgrade," the same staff member backtracked, said it "should have been done," then claimed the hotel was now full and nothing could be done. It left us feeling misled, as though the promise was made on the assumption we wouldn't notice. As an IHG member accustomed to a 2 PM late checkout, I was offered only an extra 30 minutes. The room was also the furthest possible from reception — up stairs and through several corridors. Other issues compounded it: dirty towels left in the hallways throughout our stay, and fire alarms going off repeatedly the morning of departure. A frustrating experience for what should have been a special occasion. The core issue wasn't the room itself but being told one thing and delivered another.

Budget hotel for a reason- easily accessible from the main roads and on the way to Dover. Rooms are awkward layed if you have your sofa bed opened, making it almost impossible to cross through the room and get to the bathroom as there is a tiny gap. Bathroom needs serious tlc, but it is in working minimum standards. The shower tho, keeps getting extremely hot for few seconds while you shower which is not ideal. The kettle in the room we've had was also mouldy, so it definitely wasn't checked in a while, but it was replaced straight away. The beds were clean and comfortable, but the room is hot and you cannot adjust temperature other than the fan provided or to open the window. The hotel also has an upper level and no lift facilities. So not accessible if you have a baby, but we managed. The car park only costs £3/ night which was decent. Breakfast was also really good. Hot and fresh food, and staff very friendly. Overall a good budget hotel 3/5 to stop for a night or so.
