About Ammonite Lodge Guest House
Ammonite Lodge Guest House occupies an 18th-century cottage on the High Street in Chard, Somerset, its age giving the place a settled, low-key character rather than anything grand. With just six rooms, it operates on a small scale, more like staying in someone's well-kept old home than a conventional hotel.
Guests get a comfortable room and a cooked breakfast included each morning, along with use of a lounge and a garden for quieter moments away from the street. Free WiFi is available throughout, and free on-site parking makes arriving by car straightforward, which is handy given the town centre setting.
Chard itself sits within easy reach of the Somerset countryside, making the guest house a sensible base for exploring the surrounding area. It is a simple, unfussy place to stay, well suited to those who want a genuine period building and a good breakfast rather than extensive facilities.

What guests say
We stayed for just one night, but Ammonite Lodge made a wonderful impression. The room was spotless, tidy, and incredibly well-equipped with every detail thoughtfully prepared. The lodge perfectly blends classic British charm with unique East/Southeast Asian decorative twists. The back garden is a highlight, it has a cozy, authentic cottage atmosphere that you simply don’t find in modern hotels. Breakfast was excellent, and our hosts, James and Catherine, were delightful to chat with, providing us with plenty of great local travel tips. It was excellent value for the price, and we look forward to staying here again!

Great for our overnight stay in Chard. Friendly family, comfortable rooms and good breakfast. The building is old with steps and low ceilings, so may not suit everyone. Our bathroom was across the hall, but still private to us.

Unfortunately, this was the worst stay of our UK trip. The owner was extremely unwelcoming, as he threatened not to allow us to check in late. After a long day of traveling, we called around 8:30 pm to inform them we were still far away and would arrive around 11–11:30 pm. The listing clearly states that late check-in after 10 pm is possible with a £20 fee. Instead of accommodating this, the owner became angry on the phone, repeatedly saying that check-in was at their “discretion” and that they would not be “held at ransom” (their exact words). They insisted they would not wait past 10:30 pm because they wanted to go to sleep, even if that meant leaving our group of five without accommodation for the night. We drove as fast as we safely could and kept them updated. The owner reluctantly extended the latest possible check-in to 11 pm but firmly stated that after that, no one would answer the phone or open the door. For travelers in a foreign country, this rigid and hostile approach was the opposite of hospitality. I strongly recommend avoiding this place at all costs. For practical details: ceilings in some rooms are very low (easy to hit your head when getting up from bed), and in certain rooms the bathroom is not en-suite—it is located outside and only accessible via stairs. This setup was uncomfortable and inconvenient, especially at night or for older guests.
